De Land was a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States., near Tallahassee. It had a population of about 1,000 people when it became part of the newly formed Seminole Nation in 1835. The community name is from a place called DeLand on the Indian River and its main industry was raising cattle. In 1841, De Land's post office was renamed Fort Scott after U.S. General James Scott who had been killed in action at Bull Run Bridge during the Mexican-American War. In 1840, De Land's courthouse was built and operated by Judge John Paulding until he resigned in 1849 to become Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. The fortifications were completed in 1847 by Major General Samuel Chapman and served as an arsenal for Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest during his campaign against Union forces in Polk County. In 1840, Henderson and other settlers founded what would become Jacksonville; De Land became part of Jacksonville on January 1, 1851. By 1860, there were only a few hundred residents remaining in De Land while more than 5,000 people lived within Jacksonville proper and 3 miles (4 km) south of where it now stands. The post office closed on October 15th 1865 due to low postal volumes which increased with the American Civil War; de land no longer received mail service after that date
In 1912, De Land was founded as an incorporated town in northeastern Florida. The name change to Jacksonville in 1926 and again to DeLand in 1959. It became a city on May 3, 1959.
