From 1892 until 1953, De Land was the home of the Jacksonville Arms Company. This gun company made pistols, rifles, shotguns and other firearms. The company was started by two men named John Fenton and James Smeaton. In 1902, they started a store in what is now called the JAMAICAN Market Place. From 1905-1927, they had an armory on Second Street in DeLand. The armory was used for storage, manufacturing and testing of firearms.

De Land is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. De Land was founded by white settlers in 1827 as a citrus grove on what is now Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The first post office was established in 1828 and the name changed to DeLand in 1859 when it became an incorporated village. In 1926, DeLand merged with nearby Pensacola and had its own police department until 1932 when it merged with Escambia County's department. The original courthouse still stands today located on Main Street near State Highway 97A (Veterans Memorial Boulevard). The town grew quickly due to its natural resources such as sugarcane, cotton, lumber and phosphate production which continued until World War II when production stopped due to the war effort. After the war ended, the economy slowly improved thanks to new industry such as software development and health care services while also experiencing some decline during this time period including a decrease in population from 2,844 at the 2000 census to 1,526 at the 2010 count due to migration and other factors including demography changes within Escambia County since then. In recent years there has been renewed interest in De Land as a tourist destination because of its history along with its many attractions that include beautiful architecture built during early American settlement or later additions like Veterans Memorial Boulevard which has been turned into a major shopping street with numerous restaurants and retail stores among others; all of which make it one of Pensacola-Ft Walton Beach's most popular destinations for visitors looking for both culture AND nature!
The area now known as De Land was first settled by the Creek Nation in the mid-19th century. The area was purchased by Colonel James Wilkinson in 1836, and it became part of Florida after he won the Seminole Wars. In 1845, Wilkinson organized a group of settlers to purchase what is now Jacksonville from the Seminoles. The land was mostly swampy and too difficult to cultivate, but Wilkinson managed to develop it into a town with a market economy. He also founded Yale University in that town. In 1898, De Land became part of Jacksonville County and was renamed for Major General Andrew Jackson deLand who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been appointed governor of Florida by President Thomas Jefferson Davis.
