Daytona Beach, Florida is known as the "City of Dreams" and has been classified as a "Bella Vista" by the Times in their 2003 article "Daytona Beach: The Dream Capital of America". It is home to two major tourist attractions, Daytona International Speedway and the Daytona Beach Convention Center. The city was founded on December 12, 1928, by three brothers named Edward A. Moore, Harry H. Bowman and Raymond L. Smith. On October 5, 1929 the first car race was held at Daytona Beach Speedway and within a year it had become an important stop on the NASCAR calendar. In 1932 the state of Florida purchased 1/3 of the track for $25,000 which made it one of only four tracks in North America that could host a NASCAR event. In 1935 Daytona Beach became part of Miami-Dade County and was renamed to its current name - Daytona Beach - on January 1st, 1937. The city enjoyed another period of success during World War II when it became known as "the wartime capital of America." There were numerous factories that produced munitions for war effort such as Ford Motor Company who built Camp Butler where soldiers were trained before being shipped off to Europe. One such plant which produced tanks was located in nearby Mims and operated by Chrysler Corporation from 1942-1945 under the nickname "Mimosa Plant". During this time there also emerged what would later be called "the golden age"of Daytona Beach's tourism industry with both locals and visitors alike flocking to enjoy everything from sunbathing to sailing on its wide beaches; however this era came to a close following World War II and PAL Television began broadcasting live coverage of races at Daytona International Speedway starting in 1951 which contributed significantly towards its decline over subsequent decades until 1978 when they finally dismantled their track citing financial reasons alone; however even then it wasn't until 2007 when new owner Andretti Autosport decided to revive interest in motorsports in town once again with plans initially for them to renovate Evergreen Raceway into an oval but eventually opting for building a brand new track specifically designed for autocrossing purposes adjacent to town centre just outside Ofkin Park which will open in late 2015). In 1948, due to increasing competition from more populous neighbouring cities such as Miami and Tampa Bay Area Naval Base expansions were begun which led to heavy development of businesses and homes along Mallory Road (now Boulevard) between Sandusky Avenue and US 1/19th Street east of downtown; this area now known as Canal Walk Historic District contains most of what remains of that early commercial center today while also containing some typical 1920s architecture including several buildings dating back to that time which are popular tourist attractions for those interested in historical buffs only or who want a glimpse at what life might have been like during that time period without having any connection to it directly
