The Daytona Beach area has been a destination for gun enthusiasts since the 1800s. The first known firearms competition in Daytona Beach took place on July 12, 1892. At that time, the town was only a small community of about 250 people. There were no formal rules or regulations in place at this early event, and shooters from all over came to compete. During the years following, other communities in the area started holding their own GUN FESTivals, which quickly became one of the most popular events in Daytona Beach. In 1902, GUN FESTIVAL organizer and entrepreneur J.B. McAllister announced plans to hold an annual event with a $1,000 purse at his amusement park called “The Fairgrounds” in downtown Daytona Beach. The inaugural GUN FESTIVAL drew more than 100 competitors from across Florida and Georgia! By 1920,gunfest had become an annual event held at various locations across southern Florida including Port particularly Jacksonville but it would be located outside of town until 1923 when it moved back into city limits within Boca Raton Park (now Palm Bay) In 1927-28 Gun Festival promoters James Hogg and Wm Gimblett decided to move the festival inside of Boca Raton Park after seeing how successful THE FAIRGROUNDS EVENT had become there In 1934-35 Mrs Lillie Mae Phelps organized a WOMEN’S GUNFESTIVAL which attracted over 1,500 women shooters from throughout South Florida In 1939-40 THE FIRST PISTOL RIFLE SESSION IN TEXAS WAS HELD AT THE PARK WITH OVER 200 COMPETitors FROM ALL OVER SOUTH FLORIDA In 1945 A SHOOTING CLUB WAS FORMED AT THE PARK TO HELP SUPPORT THE OFFICIAL PROGRAM OF Gun Festivals By 1951 Gun Festival organizers Clarence King & Harry Bennett had decided that they wanted to make their festival more like an international exposition by having competitions between different nations Gun festivals continued to grow and develop through the years as organizers tried new techniques such as televised shows/competitions and large open areas for shooting . At present day there are over twenty-five major gun festivals taking place throughout southeasternFlorida annually

The name "Daytona" comes from its founder, George Washington Carver's plantation on Daytona Island. The first permanent European settler in what is now Daytona Beach was James Purdy who arrived in 1795 with his family and built a trading post on the island. He set up camp here for several months before moving southward across Indian Creek towards Fort Walton Beach where he began construction on a Plantation nearpresent day downtown Daytona Beach. After three years he finished building and moved his headquarters to Green Cove Springs where he may have also founded an agricultural center called Forest Park which still exists today within walking distance of downtown Dayton Beach. In 1911, Congress authorized annexation by Tallahassee of all but four counties inFlorida without allowing any vote or referendum so communities like Daytona could not secede until 1912 when they did so via ballot initiative with only 5% turnout living within contiguous Indian Territory at that time including much of east central FL as well as parts of Alabama and Mississippi prior to statehood in 1907 under then Governor Millard Tydings having been elected while running unsuccessfully for President as a member of the Republican National Convention ticket bound for office rather than serve out full term as Ulysses S. Grant had done earlier that year after being confirmed by the United States Senate upon confirmation process following impeachment proceedings against Vice President Andrew Johnson). On July 1st 1912 all Unincorporated areas west and south beyond Cities Limit became towns known as Collier County according to party affiliation being one feature implemented due primarily to lack of voter Turnout for Incorporation referenda held throughout Unified Territory during early 20th century despite efforts made by various bodies including League Of Women Voters (LoWV) predecessor organization called Civic League which met regularly throughout Unincorporated Territories regardless participating in Legislature since women were not then considered citizens nor allowed suffrage therein under State Constitution effective January 1st 1915 notwithstanding woman’s right granted pursuant To Amendment approved November 6th 1903 becoming law five days later via proclamation issued by Governor Royal Blythe effective December 12th 1913.) Daytona Beach was founded in 1898 by J.B. Grimes. The city was named after the Daytona Peninsula, which is located in the state of Florida. In 1907, the General Motors Company built a car plant there and named it after its founder, James B. "Jim" Hendrick. The plant produced cars until it closed in 1969. The city was renamed Daytona Beach on November 15, 2007, following the passage of a local referendum to do so.
