Polk built his winter home – "Eagle Point" – near where today's Interstate 95 meets Canaveral Boulevard south of downtown Daytona Beach. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer came through town for his final battle against Sitting Bull and spent Christmas at Eagle Point before continuing his journey eastward to victory over Sioux Indians at Little Bighorn Battlefield two days later. In 1906, after several years of planning and construction work by local businessmen Waddell Coolidge and Harry Goudy Jr., modern day Daytona Beach was born when Coolidge purchased land east of US-2 between Indian Lake Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard from developer Walter Ewing Cummings II for $5 million dollars cash plus interest payable over a fifteen year period; making it one of America's youngest cities when founded). On July 4th 1907, while still under development as "New Port", workers laying track on South Main Street destroyed part of a mangrove swamp that would become Ocean Avenue which fronts Dooley Park later that year becoming "Old Port". Daytona Beach, Florida is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,362 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Daytona Beach landed there in 15 Emancipation Day (March 3) 1584 by Spanish navigator Juan Ponce de León during his second journey across the Atlantic Ocean. He named it "Los Castilla" after his possession in Spain. On November 17th, 1837 two Englishmen who had been sailing down the Florida coast were shipwrecked on Big Pine Key and became land-based travelers for nearly three years before being discovered by Captain David Rusk of USS Constitution under way from Havana to Savannah with supplies for General Pierce Butler's Expedition against Seminole Indians at Fort Pickens on February 2nd 1839 while anchored off Daytona Beach. Commodore John Denny chartered HMS Dolphin for this purpose and sailed from Halifax on December 5th 1840 with Captains James Cook and John Fenton in tow bound for Tampa Bay but they only reached Cape Canaveral when their boat got caught between shoals near Stonington Harbor October 10th 1841 On November 17th 1861 Jacksonville voters elected Jno Hatton Lieutenant Governor over William Lowther who had run as an Independent candidate unopposed Hatton served one term (1861-1865) before he was elected U.S. Senator from Florida (1865-1901). He remains one of only two people ever to serve more than two terms in that office In 1865 Jacksonville established its first school which was located at present day Dunedin High School In 1902 the city limits were extended eastward to include parts of Volusia County including Daytona International Speedway
The Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1892. The first post office on the beach opened in 1893. In 1907, the city of Daytona Beach incorporated and a mayor and council were elected. The first street in Daytona Beach was Fourth Street. In 1911, the city annexed part of Brevard County and renamed it Daytona Beach County. On October 1, 1912, the city repealed its incorporation and became a town withinBrevard County with a mayor and council.
