In 1898, following news articles about conditions inside Spanish Fort during Cuba's “Pancho Villa” campaign,[1] American forces landed at nearby Port Royal Bay and burned much of Havana before moving inland towards Key West where they encountered Mexican forces encamped at San Miguel de Allende near present-day downtown Miami; this set off what is called Battle of Santiago Point[2] which resulted in more than 150 killed or wounded Americans and 5 Mexicans including Villa[3]. This event helped give Broward County its nickname—The Land That Never Sleeps because although most people knew about Key West and Havana(then known as Santo Domingo), nothing was known about Marathon Point (today's Port Royal). Following World War II activity increased along U S -Mexico border due to new Marshall Plan legislation providing funds for reconstruction consequent upon America's victory in World War II; however, by early 1949 these projects had largely stopped due to economic reasons following Roy Moore becoming governor of Alabama.[4][5][6] By 1990 Daytona Beach had reached its current size with only 2% growth since 1990 due to annexation by neighboring Hillsborough County.[7] This growth was not limited to just Greater Daytona Beach but also included portions of Davie and Stonington counties adjacent thereto as well as parts of unincorporated Baker county west Of Palm Coast Line up until that point which then became part of Volusia County effective January 1st 1971[8]. On November 3, 1927, Hurricane Earl struck the state and caused extensive damage to Daytona Beach and other nearby communities; however, it did not kill any people in what is known as the "Great Dayton". On July 8, 1957, during the height of its seasonality (a time when vacationers were flooding into the area), Daytona beach saw over 24000 visitors come through its doors!
