Daytona Beach is a small town in the U.S. state of Florida, on the Atlantic coast of the country. The population was 16,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade County metropolitan area and is located just south of Miami proper on US 1 and east of Daytona Beach proper on SR 836. The first Europeans to visit what is now Daytona Beach were Giovanni da Verona and his brother Amerigo Vespucci in 1492. In 1565, Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avila established a base here for his explorations along the southern Gulf Stream; he named it La Isla de la Vega (Island of Vega). In 1763, British naval officer James Cook discovered this cape while travelling along the Americas coastline and named it after King George III's patron saint, Saint George. In 1821, General Hernando De Soto led an expedition sent by Spain to explore Florida; his men built Fort Moultrie here on December 21st as they explored what would become Seminole Country today. A year later he destroyed all local Indian villages near Pensacola with cannons after finding them living in secret without any food or shelter due to their fear that contact with white people might lead to their extermination by Spaniards under conditions similar to those found among Native Americans during Pablo Escobar's cocaine conspiracy years earlier! On November 3rd 1830 elections were held for members of Congress from Florida which resulted in Andrew Jackson being elected as its first governor with John Ladd becoming its first congressman In 1835, De Soto's forces burned Casa Grande where Columbus had landed 350 years earlier! Afterward La Isla de la Vega became known as "Daytona" after Governor Jackson who made it one of his official duty locations! The Town Board voted unanimously to change its name from "Casilla" (House) to "Daytona" effective July 1st 1907! Downtown was platted out starting with Fourth Street NW corner First Street SW corner Third Avenue NW corner Jefferson Boulevard NE Corner between Second Avenue NE & Third Avenue NE Streetscape remodeling started in 1951 when Main Street was widened from 4 lanes wide (now 2) down to 3 lanes wide including a new bridge over US 1 (now I-4) completed in 1992 when Interstate 4 was expanded from northeastern Daytona Beach into southeastern Daytona Beach
