Dania Beach is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It was founded as Dania by American colonists in 1849. Dania Beach became an incorporated city on May 3, 1909. The town's name comes from Danish girl Dany who is said to have been the inspiration for the name of a small trading post on the beach. The post served as a stopover for smugglers and pirates during Seminole Wars and other pirate attacks on Spanish ships off the coast ofFlorida. In 1905, local entrepreneurs built what is now known as the "Beach Hotel" which remains one of only two inhabited buildings inDania Beach today. The first store in town opened its doors in 1851 and continued operations until 1903 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by Hurricane Andrew*. A Post Office was started in 1852 and operated until 1893 when it also burned down*. In 1906, local businessmen built what is now known as "The Beaches" hotel which still stands today*.* In 1912, Dania Beach residents voted to become a city and incorporation took place that same year†.* In 1916, war veterans arrived in town after World War I and began setting up homes*.* They set up home bases around Southwest Boulevard (now State Road 90) where they developed some of their most famous beaches including Clearwater beach which still exists today*,.* By 1922 all but one house had been destroyed by fire or stormrelated damage*.* A post office reopened on December 12th 1922 with mail being delivered through private cars from Tampa*) * *. On October 2nd 1928 hurricane Charley hit Florida leaving much destruction along landfall including parts ofDania Beach’s downtown business district**† *. The first development in the area was a small gas station on the corner of Third Street and Gulf Boulevard. In 1928, the company built its first hotel called the "Dania Plantation" which still stands today. In 1932, Dania Beach became an incorporated city under the name of Dania Beach Corporation. In 1934, voters passed a proposition to rename the town after President Franklin D. Roosevelt. On November 3, 1935, Roosevelt's plane crashed into a bluff near Point Clear in Flagler County killing all aboard including FDR who had been vacationing in nearby Stonington at that time The crash is widely considered to be one of the deadliest accidents in American aviation history
