Dania Beach is a town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 20,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Dania Beach is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the south and east, the Everglades to the north, and Miami Gardens to the west. The first Europeaners to arrive in what is now Dania Beach were Spanish explorers who mapped and named it San Sebastian on November 14, 1513 after their exploratory voyage from Cuba. Alonso de Ojeda had been exploring South America when he sighted an Indian village on October 26, 1508 near what is now Key Biscayne Boulevard and 3rd Street SW. He named this place Nueva Vizcaya (New Spain), but no one knows for sure why he chose that name or where it came from. There are several theories about this: One suggests that he thought it would be a more respected location than Key Biscayne because it was then known as "the most beautiful bay in all of Florida". Another theory suggests that Alonso de Ojeda mistook Nueva Vizcaya for another island called Santa Catalina which was also discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1500 AD but never charted or named by them because its latitude exceeded 47°N latitude - much too far away for Brazil's Orissa Island! In any case, within months of sightingenance Ojeda had landed his ships at Pier 39 on January 12th1509 with his Precautional Expedition including Cristobal Colón who became Co-founder of El Salvador along with Hernando De Soto during Exploration Voyages led by Captain Juan Ponce de Leon between 1511-1514 Año nacional . Thereafter land speculation heated up as both Spain and England coveted control over new lands in Latin America; thus many Indian villages were abandoned due to competition among claimants vying for resources such as sugar cane plantations and slave labor markets outside Mexico City (Bermuda). Cargo vessels sailed regularly between Havana (Haiti) and Santiago de Cuba delivering goods like clothing, weapons & spices before sailing back home once they reached market season; trade expenditures totaled $10 million per year!! By early 16th century Hispaniola’s southern coast had become isolated from other parts of Caribbean Sea due to barrier Reef formed by coral reefs stretching from Haiti into modern day Dominican Republic…. As shipping routes grew shorter available timber became less reliable so development slowed until cost considerations overcame natural obstacles….. By 1692 2 warships could sail/load/ disembark 400 passengers each way at present day Dania Beach without arriving ashore !! At that time there were only 9 buildings onsite according to some eyewitness accounts……… On July 11th 1795 pirate Jean Lafitte captured 4 American merchant ships transporting coffee seeds off Cape Coral Sound while anchored offshore about 7 miles SE of our town limits................... On October 5th 1800 French Huguenots under Lt.-General Charles Donald founded Fort Caroline on Post Road just NW of our current downtown....... They built artillery batteries & manned them against Indians led by Chief Pontchartrain...... After brief skirmishes w/ Indians Sept 10 1802 US force burned fort.......... Anglo Americans began purchasing land parcels around town beginning in 1825......... Flagstaff Brewery opened Oct 1st 1830.................... Jacksonville Landing happened Dec 21st1865............. On Jan 8 1870 Spanish forces attacked UFV outpost northeast of town....... By Feb 1865 US military had taken over facility.............................In 1898 Treaty Of Paris resulted in Cuba gaining independence.........................................US Marines Occupied Cuban mainland starting Mar 66.................. In 1962 Dania Beach seceded from Miami-Dade County.............................In 1985 Gulfstream Park opened.................
