Dania Beach was first settled in the early 1800s by pioneers who came from Georgia. The town was named after King Dania of Spain and her husband, Carlos III of Spain. The Spanish Colonial period of Dania Beach began in 1821 when Captain Pedro Martinez landed at the beach with his ship, San Antonio. He founded a small community called El Punta del Fuego on what is now State Road 522. In 1826, Governor Manuel Rosales ordered the military to clear land for development around Fort Myers so thatannels could be built to connect Florida with Cuba. General José María de la Costa y Costilla moved his army from Tampa to Dania Beach in 1830 and laid out a square block known as Plaza de los Indios. In 1833,Captain José Gomez López discovered oil seeps at El Fuego and decided to develop them into an oil field. The town started using kerosene lamps instead of candles in 1835 and they became the first municipalities in Florida to do so. In 1840-41, Captain José Gomez López organized a group of colonists who set up a mission at San Marcos Bay near present day Pensacola while they were exploring the Gulf Coast for new land grants and trade opportunities. They named their settlement San Miguel de Allende (St Michael’s Fortress). When Captain Lopez died during an expedition ashore on May 15, 1840, most of his colonists emigrated with him including Father José Méndez y Arellano who would found St Agustín's Cathedral later that year. By 1848 about 150 people lived in this little cluster along US Highway 98 east of present day Dania Beach Boulevard between SR 522 and SR 523F The Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830 which led to more than 2 million Native American citizens being forced from their homes across America between1830-1865 inclusive In 1906 Dania Beaches incorporated as a city under state law 614 A which provided for limited municipal services including fire protection On December 12th 1915 Hurricane Wilma hit Daytona Beach killing over 100 people On May 25th 1932 both Daytona Beach Municipal Court Annexes were destroyed by fire damage caused by Cyclone Floyd
