In 1957 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged two channels through the beach so that ships could enter and leave without getting wet while still protecting shipping lanes in between F-5 and F-7 Keys; as a result, commerce grew rapidly and businesses such as General Motors (GM) built businesses along US 1A near US 1B which connected with GM's plants in nearby Sanford and Lakeland. In 1966 an industry park was created adjacent to US 1A called Dolphin Point Industrial Park which included many large companies like PepsiCo (PEP), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Pfizer Incorporated (PFE), Allstate Corporation (ALL), Lowe's Companies Inc., Carnival Corporation (CAT) and others Additionally some smaller companies were established within this industrial park including: ABC Radio Company; American Airlines; Boozehound; BP Services USA LP.; Caspar Weinberger Associates LLP.; Chubb Insurance Company; Deere & Co.; Dunkin' Donuts Corporation (); Fisher King Manufacturing Company.; GEICO Insurance Company (); Hale & Hoe Engineering CO.; Home Depot Stores Incorporated (); IBM ; Johnson Controls Incorporated (); Lilly Pulitzer INC." These larger companies were later purchased by other corporations or merged with various other organizations throughout the 1990s and 2000s leading to diminishing local employment opportunities for locals although some small businesses have continued to thrive since then especially around US 1A where many new restaurants have opened up in recent years due to its proximity to major shopping malls in Orlando/Kissimmee/Sanford area
