Cutler Bay is located on State Road 356, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of St Petersburg. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first settlers in Cutler Bay were George and Martha Cutlar who arrived in 1836 from New York City. George Cutlar operated a ferry service connecting Cutler Bay with Largo and Clearwater on the Gulf of Mexico. He also raised pigs and horses there until his death in 1851. Martha Cutlar continued to run the ferry service until her husband's death in 1875; then she took over the business herself, continuing to operate it until her own death in 1927. Cutler Bay post office was established on December 15, 1907; it was discontinued effective February 14, 1959. The first school in Cutler Bay was built by Mrs John Hatton Dickson in 1909; it served as a daycare for children between kindergarten and grade school before being moved to its current location four years later when that village opened its new high school building.. In 1953, Mrs Gertrude Spicer opened one of the first Korean grocery stores east of the Mississippi River when she purchased land north of present-day CutlerBay Boulevard and established her Korean Grocery store named after her mother – Korea National Store Incorporated vSPICER (No 2)). The store closed operations circa 2006 but remain a local landmark still remembered today as “The Korea National Store” which can be seen from across US Route 356 just south of town limits! A few blocks east along this same stretch lies another local landmark which still stands – The old Cream Cannery Estate now home to The Gourmet Place restaurant & Bakery! This site has been currently occupied by various businesses including an auto dealership since 2007 however we are working hard to restore and reopen our beloved "The Cream Cannery" as soon as possible! Although many people think that CutlerBay should be listed separately because it has more unique items such as "The Korea National Store" mentioned earlier - I believe that given all that CutlerBay has going for it - combined with what Pinellas County has to offer - it deserves its own article or section within this website specifically called "CutlerBay: History & Culture". So without further ado - lets get started shall we? In 1906 resident James P Murray began farming nearpresent-day Cutlers bayou which yielded good crops but he expended so much energy trying to improve his farmstead that he became quite ill during Prohibition era due to stringent alcohol laws then prevailing in America hence his decision not To drink alcohol anymore even though he could afford several cases per week! His son Charles W Murray continued farming however ran into financial difficulties due to prohibition busting so James sold most if not all his assets interest free back then known as Country ClubLand cashed $500 worth of government bonds! This event led directly into Charles W's father James P Murray Sr.'s ownership/operations of country club which continues today outright being one of largest private sector employers within central Pinellas County!!! Thus starting off what would become one Of America's premiere country clubs!! As you enter cutterbay proper from Mattituck Rd take left onto highway 356 Proceeding past community center take right onto SR 357 leading us straight into town Limits!!!!
