Cutler Bay is a town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Cutler Bay is part of the Tallahassee-Fort Walton Beach-Ponte Vedra metropolitan area. The Cutler Bay Historic District encompasses most of the town center and is one of the oldest districts in Leon County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Cutler Bay was founded by John Cushing and his family on January 12, 1871, as Cutler's Corners on what is now U.S. Highway 301 Alternate east of Fort Walton Beach. They named their settlement after George Washington Cutler who had helped them settle their land following a disastrous Native American Encounter near present day Cutler Bayou on November 25, 1870. A post office called Cutlers Corners was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1907. The first school in Cutlers Bay opened on September 5, 1879 under instruction from Mrs. Fenton with thirteen students using an old barn at that time located just east of present day University Avenue between Baker Street and Gulf Boulevard NW (now US 301). A second school building burned down on December 8th 1881 while it was being constructed butwas rebuilt soon afterwards with additional classrooms and a shop/laboratory across University Avenue from where it still stands today which served as the original store front for both schools until 1914 when they were combined into one building known as Wm Giffin & Brothers Store which still stands to this day inside the current boundaries of the district which boundaries were drawn by then State Superintendent Drue Millington back when he also lived therewith during that time too! In 1908 Mrs Eileen Snider became principal after serving as assistant for three years previous to that; her first full term began September 3rd 1908 having been appointed August 15th 1907 due to an earlier resignation caused by ill health from which she recovered without any loss or damage though many believe she actually resigned because she did not want Polk County to get control of their new high school built outside Ofletown and wanted instead for her own daughter Lillian Snider who would become headmistress therefromitselfat least some say purposely!! Mrs Snider left behind a legacy that would continue through multiple administrations even unto this very day including current Principal Donna Sweeney who became sole administrator upon Mrs Sweeney's retirement effective July 1st 2006 !!!!! All told more than 2 million vehicles pass through Cutler bay annually just off US 401W providing jobsites, shoppers etc., all while helping support local businesses - giving locals access not onlyto essential services but also valuable tourist attractions such as world class shopping malls locating less than half mile away! Today Cutler bay fills up quickly each summertime due largely to two factors: increased visitation demand associated with I-4 Corridor construction nearby (2007-present) combined with continued growth within Polk County resultant from annexation efforts!
