Cutler Bay is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Cutler Bay is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is named after Samuel Cutler, who donated land to the town in 1881. The first settler in what is now Cutler Bay was David Brower, who arrived in 1839. He built a cabin on his farm and later bought the farm of Nicholas Purdy from Purdy's brother and moved his family to CutlerBay in 1845. In 1865, George Wintney settled down near Cutler Bay on acreage he had purchased from Jens Sorensen for $1 per acre. On November 6, 1865, Wintney married Sarah Keyes at her home there. A post office called Cutler Bay was established at this location on December 3, 1865., and remained in operation until it closed on July 14, 1899. In 1882 Samuel Cutler donated land to the town of Jacksonville for its development; it became known as Cutler Bay after him. The first store opened there by Nancie Bigham on September 25th of that year; it was powered by an engine she had brought over from Stonington ( Connecticut). By 1886 when gasoline began to be available for sale throughout Jacksonville proper Residents started driving their autos around town "straight into" the grocery stores where they bought unleaded gasoline! The population of Cutler Bay increased rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to new transportation methods such as railroads and water carriers bringing goods and people into town limits which were otherwise isolated by farms or riverside villages
