Cutler Bay is home to many businesses and residences that support maritime activity, including Cuttler Bay Marina and Cuttler's Wharf Seafood Company. In 1892, George Withers opened his Gunnery School in Cutler Bay, which became one of the leading schools in America for firing artillery and pistols. The town's economy is based largely on agriculture and fishing; it also has a few small businesses that do not rely primarily upon agriculture or fishing. There are several restaurants and shops in the town, as well as two banks and one grocery store. The population of Cutler Bay at the 2000 census was 1,711 people. The community was originally named "Cutler City" after Captain James W. Cutler's brother-in-law, George Washington Cuttlesworth (1856-1929). In 1915, the name was changed to "Cutler Bay" in honor of Captain JW Cutting who had been its first mayor from 1921 to 1925 when he served as Vice Mayor under Mayor John Hynes (1898-1965). In 1958, Cutler Bay became a city with its own government after winning an election against annexation by neighboring Davenport which would have created a larger municipality with more services and more taxes for residents in Cutler Bay than what CutlerBay could afford to pay alone. On December 5th 1959 the city voted unanimously to become an official part of Miami Gardens through annexation which added over 2,000 residents to the city including many who had moved into the area since 1958 when it became an official part of Miami Gardens through annexation

Cutler Bay was founded by John Cutler in 1881 as a small fishing settlement on the mouth of the bayou that flows into Nassau River. The first post office was established in 1882, and Cutlersville was platted in 1886. The town grew rapidly due to its position on the Gulf of Mexico and its access to natural resources such as lumber and seafood. By 1907, Cutler had developed a Deepwater Shipbuilding Company which built ships for both American and foreign customers. In 1925, Cutler bay became an incorporated municipality with a City Council form of government. In 1959, Cutler Bay annexed part of neighboring Indian Harbour Beach which had been founded by settlers in 1905 as Daytona Beach's southernmost suburb. Became an official city on December 14th 1979 with 1,711 residents. The city has experienced several major changes over time including: -1990 when it became apparent that Indian Harbour Beach was going to be merged into Jacksonville; -2000 when Interstate 95 bypassed town; -2010 when the population passed 1,827
