By 1840, Cutler Bay had become so well-known for its weaponsmiths that Congress passed legislation authorizing them to sell shotguns! As CutlerBay became more popular with civilians and military personnel alike, demand for these services increased too! In 1872, the first rifle range was built in Cutler Bay by Captain Augustus Wirtz Sr., one of America's leading rifle manufacturers! Over time, other ranges were built too – including one that still exists today! Today, Cutler Bay offers residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy shooting sports both indoors and outdoors! Cutler Bay is a small town located in the Walton County, Florida area. Cutler Bay was founded in 1881 by Abram Cutler and his family. The original town name was "Winchester." In 1907, the community changed its name to Cutler Bay after Abram Cutler's son-in-law, John Cutler. The population of Cutler Bay increased from 1,000 in 1910 to over 10,000 by 1930. After World War II, the population decreased as people left for better opportunities in other parts of the United States. However, the population has slowly begun to increase again and currently stands at about 12,000 residents. CutlerBay's history began with Abram Cutler who arrived in Florida from Worcester, England in 1881 with his family. He started out farming land near present day Jacksonville and built a cabin on Hwy 41 near present day Cutlersville. After several years of farming and fishing he decided to Leone County and set up shop there. His first store was called the "Old Store." In 1886 he married Anna de la Cruz which made him one of the first Spanish settlers in what is now Walton County! For many years Abram cut wood for local fires which contributed greatly to early development of this part of Florida! He also helped build churches and schools as well as start businesses including a sawmill and dyeing plant! John Cutler came over later that same year with his wife Anna Maria (born December 26th 1876). They established themselves around east side of town on Hwy 41 opposite where Abram had built his original Cabin back in 1881. John started out butchering animals but soon developed into a large grocery business dealing mostly groceries for local farmers & ranchers (some still do). It wasn't until 1951 when John passed away that Butchertown got their own post office - becoming one of only 3 towns outside Jacksonville to have such an important distinction! Sadly both John & Anna Maria would pass away before their home town could maintain it's reputation as being quite vibrant & alive... another example how unique & special thiscommunity really is!
