Cutler Bay is located on State Road A1A, just north of Jupiter Island. Cutler Bay's name comes from John Cutler's father, who named it after himself and his hometown of Quincy, Massachusetts. The Cutlers had emigrated to Florida in the 1840s and began farming there in the 1860s. In 1876, they bought land east of Jupiter Island and built a home that still stands today. They made salt water fishing their primary business, but also developed other aspects of the community including a post office (1896), school (1897), grocery store (1907), doctor (1910), fire department (1920),and hospital (1927). The townsite was annexed by Palm Beach County in 1914; however, it reverted to its original boundaries until 1959 when it became part of Lake Worth Estates neighborhood within Palm Beach County's new rural development plan. In May 2006, Cutler Bay residents voted 3-2 to annex into Broward County; however this did not happen because then-County Manager David Wildstein said he would veto any annexation that did not have countywide funding for improvement projects like open space preservation or infrastructure improvements such as road widening.
