Crestview, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It was founded in 1887 by Captain Jameson Grimes and his wife Mary. The name Crestview comes from the Indian word "krest," meaning "a wide open space." In 1905, Mrs. Grimes donated land to Crestview for a school. The first gymnasium was built on this property in 1909 and the first soccer team played there in 1912. On October 15, 1916, Lieutenant Colonel John H. Pershing addressed a crowd of residents at the Shrine Auditorium when he introduced the American military's new 9mm pistol - the Model 1911 pistol! This event served as the inaugural meeting of the America First Committee! In 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Grimes moved to Gainesville, Florida and continued to live there until their death in 1942. Their son Donald L. Grimes became proprietor of Crestview School after they passed away. In 1946-1947, Mr. Grimes developed an experimental soft gun case that he named the "Grimes Soft Gun Case." This case was designed to protect handguns from damage during transportation or storage by providing an easy access opening for cleaning and lubrication without having to remove the firearm from its holster or carrying case! Crestview is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Crestview is located on the eastern border of Miami-Dade County and has a land area of just over 12 square miles. It borders Miami Gardens to the south and east, Pompano Beach to the north, and Biscayne Bay to the west. The name "CrestVIEW" comes from its location on Broward Boulevard which ran through the town center until it was widened in 1951. At that time all of what is now Crestview Boulevard - from NW 132nd Street near Homestead Airport to SW 98th Street near Aventura Hills - became part of Coral Gables. Today most people refer to themselves as "Crestviewians". The first settlers in Crestview were Englishmen who arrived in 1837 and named their community after Fort Lauderdale's Royal Naval Dockyard where they had been stationed during King Ferdinand's war with Spain. After years of development by local citizens and developers, including J. Pritzker Steel Works founder John Quinn Pritzker (1886-1974), Ft Lauderdale annexed Crestview into its city limits in 1911; however annexation does not appear to have changed much about residents' social patterns or lifestyle since then other than becoming wealthier although still largely Protestant Anglo-Saxon Catholics like many others across South Florida experienced modest declines during World War II as American industry shifted away from military production towards consumer goods for home consumption only exacerbating economic disparities between racial groups further dividing cities along class lines while Southern whites continuedGraham Kirtley observed: "In general one might say that white flight within white boundaries paralleled racial flight outside them." While some African Americans did move into Crestview throughout this period there were also few if any integration efforts taking place aside from limited housing developments specifically for black residents which are often cited as being racist because they targeted low income white families rather than more upscale integrated areas such as Coral Gables or Sunrise Beach
