In 1957, Tom Reeves donated land to Crestview for a public golf course which quickly became one of the most popular golf courses in South Florida. In 1961, Harry Hines purchased 1/3 interest in Harry's Grocery Store from Jack Reeves with plans to build a shopping mall there but never did because he passed away in 1963 before any action could be taken on the project. In 1969, Bob Boren purchased 3/4 interest in Harry's Grocery from Harry Hines and erected another shopping mall which opened in 1971; it became known as Boren Mall (now JCPenney). From there, things began to change at CrestVIEW - primarily due to two factors: First, increasing competition from other developers who were building more ego-centric malls throughout south Miami-Dade County; second, increased school enrollment throughout Dade County (resulting in less parking space available) which led to budget cuts for local municipalities and businesses alike'. In response to this problem and others like it across south Miami-Dade County over the years culminating into today's $5 billion retail economy - Mayor Carlos Gimenez put together what is now known as "The Committee" consisting of various mayors from throughout south Miami-Dae county working together towards solving some common problems within our municipality - including but not limited to: creating more jobs through responsible redevelopment practices; ensuring access to affordable housing; improving infrastructure such as transportation; making sure taxes are raised responsibly so that all residents have an impact on how we operate); developing downtown crestview into something more resembling "the old days" while still preserving much of its current character.; restoring historic architecture including demolition or renovation of many buildings dating back To 1949 while also preserving important landmark pieces such as The Ridges Hotel which overlooks CRESTVIEW lake.; etc... Today crestview enjoys high levels of popularity among locals and tourists alike due largely to its vibrant downtown core complete with both cultural attractions (such as Chaparral Park Zoo), world renowned restaurants (including Benares Indian Cuisine & Sabor Filipino restaurant), beautiful homespun streetscapecomplete with horse Drawn Carriages running through them every Sunday evening during Lent ; excellent schools providing opportunities for all children regardless socioeconomically speaking (& even preK thru 12th grades);/-And lastly...... The name of the town came about because of the high hills around it and because of an event which took place there: A group of settlers traveled to Crested Hill and saw a crest (a hill) that looked like a rising sun and said "We'll call this our town" so Crestview became known as "Crestview." In 1889, Captain Levi Hines donated land for what would become the first school in Crestview; it was called Bethel School. In 1896, when Volney Post Office reopened after being closed for a year due to cholera pandemic (the disease caused by Vibrio cholerae), CrestVIEW became Volney's second post office with Emily Dent Hynes serving as its first clerk. In 1907, when Volney Post Office moved to its current location across First Street from the bank on Main Street (then owned by Mr. Beard), Mrs. Hynes served as its first female postmaster general under then-Postmaster General Jnoal Povey until her retirement in 1957 In 1911, when Forrest Post Office opened south of downtown on Second Street between Mastin Avenue and Claiborne Avenue (later renamed Gadsden Boulevard), Mrs. Hynes served as its first female assistant postmaster general under Assistant Postmaster General Harry Laughlin before her death in 1962 In 1927–29 Kenneth Kapp assigned five employees to start development work on what would become Polk County Courthouse/Library; construction began that year and finished two years later When Coral Gables annexed much of southeastern Polk County into itself in 1928, CrestVIEW became part of Coral Gables proper; however it continued to serve as Volney's second mail room until 1948 when it reverted back to its original name On July 8, 1961 Governor John F Kennedy announced plans for Interstate 95 through central Florida; however upon learning more about the area he rescinded those plans without any notice or explanation On November 1st less than one week later Hurricane Andrew struck landfall just east of Cedar Key making landfall near Port Charlotte but sparing CrestVIEW although damage was extensive along I-95 corridor within reach After Andrew passed away local officials decided not to rebuild following widespread criticism both from locals who felt they had been taken advantage by state Republicans who controlled State government at the time while also tourists visiting Central Florida were discouraged from coming because Of concerns over potential infrastructure damage if such rebuilding did take place
