In 1912 CrestVIEW FIREHOUSE COASTAL RESORT was built along State Road A1A about one mile north or east of present day Crestview Boulevard which ran through today's downtown core of Crestview. At that time it had 12 acres (5 ha) including 2 football fields and 2 restaurants/bars/theater complex(s). Today only 4 acres remain within Resort & Casino boundaries - all along State Road A1A! Crestview is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It was founded by white farmers from Alabama in the early 1800s and named for the crest of a large oak tree on the original land grant. Crestview's population peaked at about 9,000 in 1920 but has declined since then; its current population is about 4,500. The first settlers in Crestview were Confederate soldiers who had fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The men who settled in Crestview originally came from Alabama and Tennessee. In 1892, a group of businessmen from Tampa bought 1,600 acres (6 km2) of land east of CrestVIEW and gave it to John Witherspoon as his gift for his services as mayor of Tampa during that year's municipal election. In 1896, Witherspoon sold 1,200 more acres (4 km2) to James Sutherlin and others for $5 per acre ($140 total). These new owners started farming what became known as "Sutherlin Hill." In 1899, when Washington Township was formed out of parts of Polk and Pinellas Counties, Crestview became part of it. At that time there were only six houses in Crestview and its population numbered just over 100 people.
