Crestview was founded in 1857 by Captain John H. Crest and his wife, Julia. The first post office at Crestview was established in 1861. In 1865, the town became a state capital and remained so until 1959. In 1927, the Florida Legislature designated Crestview as the site of a new agricultural research station called "Florida State University." The university was chartered in 1928 and named for then-Governor of Florida, Ross Barnett. In 1957, Florida State University moved from Gainesville to Crestview after being land acquired through eminent domain. The following year, the United States Post Office at Crestview closed because of budget cuts that were made throughout much of Florida during the Eisenhower Administration. In 1969, an agricultural experiment station known as "National Agricultural Experiment Station No. 5" (NAES) was opened at CrestVIEW by General Electric Company under contract with USDA's predecessor agency USDA/NASSF. This facility operated until 1978 when it was transferred to NASA's Ames Research Center which still operates it today as one of its five environmental research centers located within NASA’s System Operations Directorate - part of Earth Science Division - also headquartered at Ames Research Center near Moffett Field California In 1984, a new shopping mall called "Crestview Mall" was built on what had been farmland northwest of town center between I-75/SR 441 and SR 624/Old US 192 . It replaced an earlier shopping center which had been built on what is now nearby I-275 . The mall originally contained over 400 stores including JCPenney and Sears although most have since closed or been converted to other uses such as apartment complexes or strip malls
