Crestview is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. The first firearms were pistols and rifles imported from Europe by settlers in the early 1800s. In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded Florida and seized control of Tallahassee, Governor Andrew Johnson repealed a state law that had allowed handguns to be sold without a license. As a result of this repeal, outlaws began purchasing handguns and shooting at local farmers and police officers who tried to enforce the law. This led to one of the most deadly gunfights in history when two gunmen opened fire on an unarmed group of farmers near Crestview on December 15, 1861. One man was killed; the other became known as "the gunman from Crestview." In 1907, large numbers of black Americans moved into Crestview from Miami Beach beginning to fill an open housing crisis following then-president Grover Cleveland's New Deal programs which offered social security and work opportunities to unemployed citizens of color. Many people in Crestview were unable or unwilling to obtain licenses for shotguns or handguns because they could not afford them. This led to some shootings that resulted in injuries but no fatalities until 1921 when two men shot dead four children playingoutside their home in what is now known as "The Playground Massacre." By 1925 more than 100 businesses had closed due to prohibitionist laws passed by Congress during its National Prohibition Party era; many businesses located within walking distance of schools stopped serving alcohol because it was now illegal without a license (although still selling snacks). These prohibitionist policies also contributed to high rates of crime rate throughout much of South Florida because criminals could operate with impunity outside the legal constraints placed on them by government officials

The post office was established in 1850 and remained open until 1924 when it became part of Tallahassee.
In 1865, Flora Cooley moved her home from Gainesville to live near her sister Lillian Scott at what is now Point Pleasant Road in Crestview. Crestview is located on FL-1 (Broward Boulevard) about 10 miles east of downtown Miami and about 15 minutes drive from Fort Lauderdale. The town was founded in 1907 by George W. Simmons as a small community known as "Boyd's Crossroads". In 1916, Simmons donated land to the city of Miami for its first municipal airport and renamed Crestview after himself and his family's home in nearby Coral Gables. Development continued until 1959 when the cityexpanded its boundaries to include all of Broward County. In 1965, Crestview became one of two towns in Broward County that were selected to become part of the newly created Southside Business District; this area now includes most of Kendallville and Sunrise Beach. In 1978, Crestview voters passed a referendum authorizing the annexation of neighbouring SpringHill Village which had originally been an independent municipality with its own school board and police department
Crestview, Florida was established in 1892 by J. H. Witherspoon and his brother-in-law, J. D. Richardson. The town was named for the crest of a hill that overlooked it. Crestview developed as a small farming community with a population of about 100 people in the early 1900s. It experienced rapid growth during World War I and II, but declined after the war ended. In the late 1990s, Crestview began to revive as a center for arts and culture, thanks to its location near international airports and its access to affordable housing. Despite this growth, Crestview has struggled financially over the years, prompting some residents to leave for cheaper neighborhoods elsewhere in the county.
