As of the 2000 census, Crestview had a total population of 4,818. In 2003, Crestview was one of only two Towns in Florida to be designated as a "National Historic Landmark" by the United States government for its role in Seminole Wars and its contributions to American culture. The town was founded by Anglo-Indian traders in 1836 as part of what would become known as Indian Territory. The first settlers arrived from Canada and included members of the Osage tribe. After several years during which they mined salt water tributaries near present-day Clearwater Bayou, they built their first permanent home on an island in Clearwater Harbor near present-day downtown Crestview on November 15, 1839. They named their new settlement Fort George after King George III of England who had visited them in 1835 while on his tour through Florida's Gulf Coast region for military purposes. By 1840 about seventy residents lived at Fort George with fifteen soldiers garrisoned there; most were Creek Indians from Alabama who had volunteered to assist General Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1845 Fort George became known as Fort Taylor when it was redesignated from post to fort following the Ulysses S Grant presidency that year. A year later General James Wilkinson took command and renamed it again - this time Fort Walton Beach - due to concerns over possible Spanish advances into central Florida across Lake Okeechobee towards Gainesville and Jacksonville (the latter being considered vital water supply for Tampa). With skirmishes between UF regulars led by Colonel John Hays against Mateo de la Luz y Arce y Fajardo – father and namesake of nearby Clearwater Bayou –and perhaps 10 or 20 Seminole warriors under Pedro Menéndez de la Vega “el Negro” (alias Manuel) taking place along with occasional raids into adjacent Georgia county eastward into modern day Hillsborough County around this time; little evidence remains today substantiating any claims regarding outright warfare between white settlers and Native Americans within Indian Territory...By 1850 all but one settler living atFort Walton Beach had come ashore from Canadian ships moored offshore; many more followed suit over coming years as transportation difficulties hampered inland travel across open country then did coterminous with settlement growth...circa 1850 abandoned land now located just southwest corner ofOld US1 & Old US9A bordered by CSX Lumber Division line & St Johns River

An early school, built on land donated by Mrs. John Hays and others in 1839, served the town until it closed in 1845 because of lack of Room. A new school was built on land donated by Captain Jno Prentice in 1861 and operated for about a year before it too closed due to financial difficulties. In 1865, after years of discussion and preparatory work by many people including Governor Andrew Johnson and Representative Wm Silliman, a road from Tampa to Kissimmee was improved and offered for sale as part of a national program called "L'Auberge du Fer". The offer included 5 miles (8 km) of white-blazed highway between Tampa and Kissimmee which became known as U.S. Route 10A or "The Road to Nowhere" because no one ever realized its potential until later when Interstate 10 was routed through the area making it possible to see the various names on roads less used today but once upon a time were very important routes
Crestview was founded on November 1, 1892 by J.B. On February 14, 1907 the town of Crestview annexed the village of Pinellas Park. The annexation created a second municipality in Florida and Crestview became its capital. On January 1, 1916, a fire destroyed part of the existing town hall, forcing the city to build a new one. The old town hall is now used as a museum.
