Crestview is located on Gulfstream Boulevard and Old Spanish Trail just east of Clearwater Bay. The name "CrestVIEW" originated from early maps which showed that the area now known as Crestview had been named for a height of land near Pensacola called "the headlands". The first settlers in Crestview were James Kelling and his wife Sarah Ann (née Caldwell) who arrived in 1837 after leaving their home in Pensacola. They built a cabin on what is now US Highway 9 south of present day Crestview Boulevard. The Kelling family operated a general store and post office there until 1840 when they sold the business to John Sills who also started a wagon shop and blacksmithing shop on what is now US Highway 2 southeast of town. In 1846, Sills married Anna Potts, sister of Colby Potts who owned one hundred acres (40 hectares) within present day CrestView Township. This made it possible for the Potts family to farm around 12 acres (5 hectares) per person with an average yield of corn and beans yielding 5 bushels per acre (.2 hectare). In 1865 local teacher Mrs Euphemia Ladd founded School No. 1 which taught 3rd through 8th gradesinderstawnearning $100 per month plus board; however by 1870 this school closed due to financial difficulties brought about by warring factions within the community over control of education resources within Polk County CrestVIEW was platted on January 24,1882 by Jno Worthy Jr., special agent with Department Of Agriculture & Fisheries For Central Florida under Governor George M Stonington . Mr Worthy donated 640 lots for development including lot #8 which became your current downtown core . One can still see evidence from this donation where two large posts are located facing each other across Gulfstream Boulevard just inside the old Turnpike entrance plaza
