He was one of the first white people to live in Crestview and he soon developed an interest in guns. Hildebrandt had worked as a gunsmith and rifle dealer before moving to Crestview, so he knew how to clean firearms. In 1898, he opened his own shop called The Gun Shop on Second Street. At that time, it was the only gun shop in town and it became very popular among locals. Hildebrandt sold his business in 1902 and moved back east to New York City. However, he continued to keep an eye on local gun ownership and sales through his mail order company. In 1916, he reopened his store but this time under the name The Gun Sales Company. This company became very successful and helped grow Crestview into a thriving community during its early years. During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime restrictions on trade. However, The Gun Sales Company didn't go away; instead, it changed hands several times until it finally merged with another local store chain in 1951. That year, The Gun Sales Company relocated its operations out of town to what is now known as West Point Mall across from Interstate 95 near US-441 (now I-95). The Gun Sales Company remained active until 1984 when it was bought by Trustees Firearms Incorporated (TFI) which then used it for storage until 2003 when it went out of business again. Today there are few references left remaining about either TFI or The Gun Sales Company; however both have been buried beneath mall development plans over the years!

The name Crestview may be derived from Spanish Fort (Chastaneda), which was located on the bayou that now bears its name. The first European to view and explore what is now Crestview was Father Broussonet in 1768 when he explored Pensacola Bayou. He named it for his friend and mentor Jean Baptiste de Rochefort who had also visited Pensacola Bayou in 1749-50. In 1775, Colonel James Grant built Fort Gaines on what is now Gulfshore Drive adjacent to present day Crestview High School. This fort served as a defense against Seminole Indian attacks until it was destroyed by British forces in 1814 during the Seminole War of 1813-1818 while under American command. CrestVIEW FIRST SAW SERVICE In 1812 Captain John Aiken commanded HMS "Eagle" while stationed off shore of Florida at St Augustine Beach with order to transport goods back and forth between that port and Havana docks; he sighted land but did not stop because he thought it might be Indians - incorrectly! Upon landing he found himself on an island called "Crestview." He named this place after one of his ships which happened to be anchored there at the time-probably HMS "Essex". Captain Aiken returned home with two cannons and supplies; this event helped establish law and order among the natives hereabouts so that future explorations would not result in such chaos! In 1840 Lieutenant Colonel George Stephenson founded Jacksonville Landing on Sanibel Island just east of present day Clearwater Beach where passengers disembarked from USS Constitution during her maiden voyage from New York City to Key West, FL - thus beginning America's first commercial steamship service! Today's USS Constitution Museum honors this important milestone in Jacksonville Landing history! LtCol Stephenson sold his business interests in Jacksonville Landing to Commodore John D'Entremont for $4,000 cash; Commodore D'Entremont then organized a fleet composed of thirteen vessels including four warships undercaptured French shipyard La Nouvelle Espérance captained by Captains Joséfina Gomez & Vicente López Vega sailing out into Tampa Bay with orders hitherward bound only foggy weather prevented them from reaching their destination! These daring voyages ended with success when they encountered no hostile action while close inshore waters were covered by towering whitecaps!] In 1850 Mrs Anna McCoy established a school here known as McCoy's Female School or Mrs McCoy's Academy - taught grades K-8th White students only] Although closed many years ago due primarily to lack of funding MrsMcCoy remains historical icon within our community] In 1861 Signal Hill Light House was erected atop Signal Hill near today’s intersection of Gulf Boulevard & US Hwy 27A ] This beautiful light house has been preserved as part of CrestVIEW Historic District since 1971] In 1928 Dr Wm Fenton Sanford opened Ft Myers General Hospital here]; later renamed Miami Carolinas Hospital] After World War II numerous businesses were started including a Golf Course [now defunct], movie theater/theater complex [credited as being one of first movie theaters open in Tampa], restaurant/bar [now defunct], medical center [now Dr Phillips Medical Center ], ice cream parlor [now defunct], post office [closed 1980s], golf course clubhouse [closed 1990s], several other shopping centers etc.]
The first settlers in Crestview, Florida were the Hammonds who arrived in 1839. The town was named for Captain John A. Hammond, a military leader during the Seminole Wars. In 1847, a group of businessmen from Jacksonville bought land around the mouth of the Stono River and built a small community there called Indian Head. In 1907, Crestview became an incorporated village and in 1915 it became a town. The first mayor was Mrs. Florence Dooley. In 1919, Crestview's water Supply Commission was formed to build a new dam on the Stono River which would provide Cullman with drinking water and make possible larger productions of crops such as cotton and citrus fruit. Crestview experienced rapid growth after World War II when millions of people moved into South Central Florida seeking jobs in newly developed industries like agriculture and construction. However, by the early 1990s Crestview had started to experience some problems with crime and decay that have continued to this day. In 1992, Crestview voters adopted an ordinance establishingemergency management procedures for certain types of crimes including drugs, prostitution, vandalism and looting within its borders
