By 1827, rifle ammunition was available to the public. Rifle manufacturers were established here in the 1840s-50s and early muzzleloader rifles were made here in the 1860s-70s. In 1871, a post office was founded at Crestview and mail service began (with horses) from Fort Myers to nearby Dania Beach on June 8th[2]. In 1892, gun chokes became available for purchase here as part of a crackdown against lawlessness in neighboring Miami-Dade County[3]. At that time, gunslingers constituted an important aspect of local life because they could transport firearms into and out of Miami-Dade County undetected. Pistol sales continued until 1919 when gun control laws changed following the Zimmerman shooting trial which led to increased restrictions on handguns including chokes.[4] Gun chokes remained popular here until they were replaced by modern shotguns beginning around 1966[5].

Crestview is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlement in Crestview was a group of Seminole Indians who had moved from their original location on the Altamonte River to what is now Crestview in 1827. A post office called "Crestview" was established in 1829, and remained open until 1895. The name may be derived from the fact that there were several tall trees in the town which could be seen from most parts of it. In 1853, local landowner and politician James Prentice donated much of what is now Crestview to Polk County as a public park. From this time forward, CrestVIEW would continue to be known as "the Park". In 1865, John Hatton opened his restaurant/bar called Hatton's Hall on US-1 near later renamed Gulfstream Boulevard (now US-192). This became one of Polk County's earliest commercial areas with its own train station on Railroad Avenue just northeast of present day Hillsborough High School (then Clearwater High School). Hatton became well known for his seafood dishes and also ran a small general store nearby along Railroad Avenue until 1886 when he sold his interest in the business to Jno. Whelan & Bros., which continues to operate today as Whelan's Store Incorporated under the same name at 4771 Railroad Ave., Suite 350). Hatton would later become involved with politics serving as an Alderman for district 3A (West side), supervisor of elections for District 2A (East side) and then member or chairperson of both House Committees on Appropriations before dying at 86 years old in 1936 after many years spent managing both businesses and government affairs. Upon his death, local media reported that he had been planning to run for office again soon thereafter but never did so due to age or health problems which finally caused him retirement at 96 years old making him one of Polk County's longest lived residents ever! In 1907 owner/operator Harry Sperling built Sperling's Lighthouse across railroad tracks east off US-1 near present day Hillsborough High School where today visitors can hike up stairs inside for views over gulfstream bay area
Crestview was founded in 1892 by James P. Forrest and his wife, Anna L. Forrest. It became a city in 1907 and then a county seat in 1925. The city limits were expanded to include the current area of Crestview on November 3, 1959.
