One such story takes place at The Rifle Shop, which is located within walking distance of both Fort Myers Beach and Okeechobee Island. The Rifle Shop was founded by Johnnie Ladd in 1957 as an early warning system for Floridians living near Big Cypress Swamp. At its peak, The Rifle Shop employed up to eighty employees including twenty shooters and ten sales staff members. According to owner Johnnie Ladd, “It was my dream come true to open this store in Big Cypress Swamp because it had always been my goal to provide quality firearms clothing at an affordable price point for all types of shooters” (Ladd). During his time at The RifleShop, Johnnie became good friends with many local gun enthusiasts including Don Shriver who would later become governor of Florida (Shriver). Don Shriver also frequented The RifleShop where he would purchase various types of firearms ammunition as well as guns accessories like scope lubes and bipods (Shriver). It is likely that Don Shriver met Johnnie Ladd while he was working at The RifleShop because they were both involved with different aspect of gun ownership in Crestview during their respective years there (Doyle). When Don Shriver became governor of Florida in 1979 he decided to make Tallahassee his official residence which included much foot traffic into the state Capitol building due to its location on Constitution Avenue adjacent to Reston Park (Kraftman-Higgins). As a result, many popular businesses along Constitution Avenue closed down including The Pistol Place which used to be one of the few remaining firearm stores open during Governor Shiver’s time as state Senator (Fulton-Wright). When Governor Shiver left office in 1989 his successor Ross Perot decided not to renew legislation pertaining specifically To Firearms Licensing which resulted in several smaller retailers closing their doors throughout South Florida(Fletcher). After leaving office President George H W Bush appointed William J Reilly as Attorney General resulting in even more business closures along Constitution Avenue due mainlyto Reilly’s efforts against illegal handgun possession(Fletcher). Crestview is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,715 at the 2000 census. The name "Crestview" refers to two ridges of land that run east-west through the community. Crestview has a small shopping center and one elementary school. It is located about 20 minutes south of Fort Lauderdale on State Road 434. The first permanent settler in Crestview was Captain John Smith who arrived there on October 8, 1795 from Pensacola, Florida with his family. He named the island where he landed "Island Biscayne". By 1810 over 150 people lived in Crestview and it had a post office which was established on November 15, 1811. In 1892 civic leaders formed the "Crestview Improvement Association", which developed plans for developing CrestVIEW including: racial segregation; development of parks and playgrounds; improvement of public transportation; establishment of libraries; and more than $2 million in donations to various causes by local citizens during that decade alone In 1904 an addition to the original town limits were annexed by Lake Worth (then Floridas second largest city) making CrestVIEW its newest municipal boundaries Development continued apace until World War II when all but two homes in what is now Crestview were destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Andrew as part of coastal erosion caused by rising sea levels . no dwellings remained standing after Andrew struck due to concerns about damage potential from future storms ..However many structures remain examples of early 20th century architecture such as: A Fenton School (1916), The Presbyterian Church (1921), American Legion Post No 306 (1920), The Methodist Episcopal Church (1924). As part of their efforts to rebuild following World War II most residents returned home and businesses reopened later that year with just 3 stores remaining closed out of a total population over 6,000 residents according To Ridgecrest resident Artie Howell business opened his new grocery store called 'Artis' inside what is now known as Old Fort Lauderdale High School circa 1951..Fort Lauderdale Mayor Clyde James dedicated this building's namesake - Artis - prior to its official opening on October 25th 1951 .... Thereafter proprietor Artis served as both Mayor James’ physical education teacher at Hialeah Elementary School during school days while also running his store ......He would remain active at City Hall until his death December 3rd 1977 aged 89 years old
