The annexation created an agricultural area that still makes up much of Coral Springs today with citrus production accounting for most of its employment opportunities today (the industry declined during World War II). In 1932 Broward County was created through merger of Duval and Palm Beach counties; Coral Springs became one of its first counties. Today's economy is based primarily on retirement living, real estate development including condominiums and vacation rentals as well as health care services stemming from SouthFlorida Health System which opened in 1982 in downtown Sunrise Ranch across from Safeway grocery store
