Plantation Heights and Coral Springs developed into distinct neighborhoods that remain today although they share some commonalities including strong African-American majorities and close proximity to both Jacksonville and Gainesville (the state's capital). The annexation made more sense financially because it gave Plantation Heights control over much more property than either the less populated SpringHill or Coral Springs had while also providing access toIgnition Road which served as both their main commercial artery and early transportation corridor connecting them all. The first white person to live in Coral Springs was Dr. George Stephenson who moved there from Jacksonville in 1907 after purchasing land near Clearwater Beach from owner Jethro Gibbs. He established himself as a general practitioner before becoming president and CEO of Gulf Coast Electric Corporation (GCE) based inJacksonville until his death in 1984; he is considered one of downtown Jacksonville's earliest pioneers.
