In 1887 it was incorporated as a village and by 1907 it had become a city with a population of over 60,000 people. In 1961 Coral Springs became an unincorporated community within Polk County and has since been its own municipality with its own government and police department. The history of Coral Springs can be traced back to 1837 when Major General James Wilkinson named two tracts on Long Island Sound "Springs" after his ancestral home in Staffordshire England which he inherited from his father-in-law Captain John Spratt who bought the land from Native American Chief Osceola before leaving for America in 1786. After Wilkinson's death in 1840 his executors donated another tract to Orange County for settlement by white men but this tract also reverted to Indian control after several years so Wilkinson's donation was again accepted and sold to Nicholas de Menil who founded Hillsborough Village on what is now US 1st Street near State Road 892 about two miles south of present-day Coral Springs on November 15, 1842. De Menil named it Parrish because he had purchased approximately one-fourth interest in Springbank Presbyterian Church (now Methodist) from Rev John Prentice about three weeks earlier for $2OOO real money that he raised through subscription among friends living near Springbank Settlement on Long Island Sound derived from shares given by their kinsmen Sir George Forbes (1768–1847), Colonel Edward Thornton (1779–1852) and others related to him via purchase or inheritance under the terms set out in an agreement dated October 25th between Nicholas deMenil Sr., Augustus De Witt Smyth (1799–1865), Nicholas de Menil Jr., AugustusPrentice(1802? – 1865) and David Teague(1798/9? – 1865).
