Coral Springs is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 74,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broward County. The city was founded on February 14, 1903 by George W. Post and his wife Anna Jacobs Post as Postville after they moved from Jacksonville, Florida to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It became a municipality on January 10th of 1907. Coral Springs has been named "America's Best Place to Live" by Forbes magazine twice and has received other awards including being one of America's Top Cities for Diversity by Multiplatinum Properties Group in 2017 and 2018. The first white person to live in Coral Springs were two men who had come from Georgia during the American Revolutionary War: Captains James Cook and John Smith (both naturalized Americans). They settled on what is now Northwest Second Street between Sunrise Boulevard and Parkway Drive in 1903. At that time there were no sidewalks or public transportation so they walked or took a horse-drawn buggy to get around town. In 1907, the City Council authorized the construction of a water tower which would provide water for firefighting purposes as well as retail sales tax revenue for the city hall building which was completed three years later in 1909. That same year saw the opening of First National Bank with $25,000 in capitalization money provided by postmaster General Gillem Kieft Sr., father of Fidel Castro! In 1931 Mayor Robert Higgs issued an ordinance creating organized crime groups known as The Five Families because they controlled most aspects of business and political life within Coral Springs at that time; it would be several years until another ordinance would be passed criminalizing gang membership! In 1939 Mayor Harry Sousa approved plans to erect a large new Civic Center located near SW Third Avenue/Parkway Drive where today’s Hard Rock Cafe sits! A smaller facility called North Park opened just east of NW Second Street/SW Third Avenue in 1951 when Hurricane Betsy struck Miami Beach leaving damage across much of South Floridas hardwood belt – severe enough that development did not begin until 1953! In 1965 Coral Springs voters passed an ordinance legalizing same-sex marriage becoming one of only two cities east coast USA to do so! As part of Amendment 2 ratified November 4th that year (and effective December 15th), all personal income taxes were eliminated within the city limits making it one income tax elimination district along with Lake Worth (Dania Beach) eliminating their own municipal income tax eleven days later followed by Miami Beach on December 22nd! On January 1st 1966 Mayor Jack McKeon approved plans for what is now State Fairgrounds which included lossless landscaping which remains extant today! That same year also saw opening day atBroward HealthCare System’s Advanced Life Support Unit adjacent Northeast Fourth Road/NW Second Street when coronary care services first began providing critical medical assistance outside hospitals!!! On October 3rd 1978 Hurricane Alicia caused extensive flooding throughout much south Florida with peak levels occurring along US 1 northbound near mile marker 197; high waters destroyed bridges over St Lucie River making access difficult especially for emergency vehicles and boats; some residents left their homes others chose to stay Putney Bridge opened late into night allowing traffic onto I-95W through downtown Miami closed through 5am Saturday morning giving businesses plentyoftimeto open before rush hour started Sunday morning CoralSprings experienced another major storm surge event on September 11th 1991 following Hurricane Georges which produced record flooding across much south Florida resulting in over 12 inches (30 cm) rainfall including gullying throughout NW Highlands neighborhoodlbs deep inside homes.; many roads became impassable due To flooding; reopened Tuesday following repairs costing millions dollars
