Coral Springs, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 61,397 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Palm Beach County. The city is located on Everglades National Park and has a population density of 412 people per square mile (158/km²). As of the 2000 U.S. Census there were 60,291 people living in Coral Springs proper and its annexed areas and 33,898 people living in unincorporated parts of Palm Beach County. As noted by planners for Broward County who created that metropolitan area through annexation of much of north Miami-Dade County during the late 1990s when South Miami was being developed as a bedroom community for Fort Lauderdale), "The urban sprawl that characterized Coral Springs over time has been replaced by dense development with all types of housing." As one moves from downtown to either side of I-95 you are immediately surrounded by large tracts devoted to residential development: an east–west arterial roadway bisecting the city forms its eastern boundary; then come straight-line streets running westward from it like veins branching out from a central core; finally come roads terminating at massive golf courses or huge shopping malls housing high-rise apartments and condominiums on both sides of them. These developments have continued unabated along I-95 ever since construction began on what would become known as "The Strip," which ran perpendicular to it between SR 528 (the old route US 1 had followed when Havana was still part of Cuba) and SR 727 (the present day Intracoastal Waterway linking Miami with Key West). Today's Coral Springs started life as tiny Indianola Prairie plantation named after Captain James Averill who built it around 1820 near present day Everglades Road and Muskegon Avenue just outside what is now Coconut Creek limits. White settlers arrived soon after this initial purchase including Captains Fenton Clarke (1793–1849) who received 8 acres (3 ha); John Dillard(1799–1857), captain general under Genovesey during American War for Independence; Elias Capps(1800–1884), agent for United States Coast Guard acquired land ceded from Spain near where Pensacola later became; Jno Wohlstetter(1801–1868), postmaster at Stonington before becoming colonel in US Army Corps Of Engineers responsible for surveys leading to creation of new counties within Florida; James Kappanheimer(1803–1859), farmer turned merchant once again owning 160 acres (60 ha) adjoiningCaptain Averill's land grant -later renamed Indianola Prairie Plantation -and building his first home there in 1827.( identities unknown) Captain Averill's heirs sold their interest in Indianola Prairie Plantation to two brothers Isaac & Jacob Sennett sometime before 1848.( sources unknown) In 1851 Captains Fenton Clarke Jr., John Dillard III purchased another 6 acres (2 ha) adjoining Captains Fenton Clarke Sr.'s holdings thus increasing their holdings to 27 acres (11ha). In 1907, Coral Springs became an incorporated municipality. In 1916, the city unsuccessfully petitioned for annexation by Miami Beach. In the early 1920s, Coral Springs began to experience rapid growth as a result of its strategic location on State Road A1A, which served as a north-south artery connecting Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale. This prosperity led to increased development in the area; in 1925, Coral Springs had over 60 businesses and employed over 700 people. In 1957, when Interstate 95 was completed through central Florida, Coral Springs saw increasing development as motorists traveling south decided to take I-95 instead of turning off State Road A1A into the heart of town. This new traffic pattern caused more congestion on State Road A1A and consequently decreased business activity in CoralSprings. By 1978, less than 10% of residents lived within walking distance of their jobs while most residents resided outside of town limits or outlying villages situated along Highway 98/State Road A1A
