Coral Springs, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and forms the southeastern border of the Broward County metropolitan area. The name "Coral Springs" comes from two different sources: first, from a West Indian Chief named Caraloo who settled in what is now Coral Gables; and second, from a salt lick near where present-day Coral Gables stands. The town began as an agricultural community on Biscayne Bay with homes built on stilts to avoid salty water reachable by boats. In 1884 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 150 people. By 1915 it had grown to 1,500 people and was renamed for President James K. Polk who had been assassinated that year. A year later it was annexed by Miami Beach which then began expanding into South Dade County leading to today's boundaries for both counties. In 1924 the Florida Legislature passed a bill allowing towns in Miami-Dade County to annex adjacent cities if they attained a population of 507 residents or more within one year after annexation. Coral Springs did so and quickly grew into one of South Dade's most important communities due its location on Biscayne Bay and access to key resources such as air traffic services and manufacturing industries located throughout Southwest Florida including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miramar and Everglades National Park

However, during the late 1990s and 2000s there were several significant setbacks that caused Coral Springs to experience another period of decline. In 2002, Hurricane Andrew destroyed many homes and businesses in central Coral Springs; this left many residents struggling to rebuild their lives. In 2004-2005 post- Katrina damage caused by Hurricane Rita resulted in an even larger decrease in population numbers; however, since then there has been slight uptick back up due to new construction projects).
