The name "Coral Springs" comes from the local mangrove swamp where developers found valuable salt water stranded after hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rico in September 2017. The city's economy revolves around tourism, which has been its mainstay since it became a town in 1914. In recent years, Coral Springs has become an upscale bedroom community for residents of nearby Miami-Dade County and Broward County. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade began in earnest here in the early 1800s when enslaved Africans were brought overland from Africa to work on plantations on the barrier island of Key West. For many years, Coral Springs was one of the most important slave markets in America because it was close to both Miami and Havana. As key trade partners with Cuba, American merchants also processed slaves through this marketplaces as well. In 1849 Key Westicer James Fenton purchased 5 African women who had been bought by Captained John Brown from a slave trader operating out of Spanish Fort on Stonington Island off Long Island Sound; he named them his wife's "niece." From then until 1865 when they were emancipated by order of President Abraham Lincoln (see Free Negroes), these black women lived among their white kin until finally being placed under arrest byagentofthe US marshal general late one night as they walked home from church near Fort Pierce Marina; their deportation ceremony took place three days later outside Fort Pierce before a large crowd assembled there led by Confederate General Leonidas Polk headquarteringatKeyWestunderthe supervisionofCaptainJohnFenton.(1) This episode provides us with an interesting insight into what must have been going through their minds as they waited for their freedom—a process that took many months and sometimes years! Nowadays you can visit several sites associated with that time including Fenton's plantation house (now called James Fenton House Museum), Point Nonso Island where they disembarked their ship (site now used for events such as Mardi Gras parades), andFort Pierce Marina where their deportation ceremony took place.(2)

Coral Springs is a small city in Broward County, Florida. It is located on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County and on the eastern edge of Palm Beach County. The population was 18,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first people to inhabit what is now Coral Springs were Creek Indians who lived near Fort Lauderdale until they were forced out by the Spanish in 1565. They soon moved southward, founding a small village between Biscayne Bay and Lake Worth called Pahokee. A group of English colonists arrived in 1763 and named it after their home country – England – but this name did not stuck for long because most people found it too Anglicized. In 1785, John Howard founded Howard's Ferry on State Road 4A which allowed goods and passengers to access both Biscayne Bay and Fort Lauderdale without having to go through Miami or Fort Myers. In 1801, Manuel Antonio de la Luz y Costilla founded La Gaceta de las Islas Canarias (The Canary Islands Gazette), which became one of the first newspapers in South Florida In 1821, Captain Manuel Fernandez y Castro acquired land north of present day Coral Springs from Apalachicola traders for $5 per acre; he then built a plantation known as Rancho la Cruz del Sur (Spanish for "theCruz fromouth," meaning "old Cruz"). This plantation was one of several that Francisco Moreno established along Coconut Grove Boulevard between SW 1st Street and SW 3rd Street in 1924 when he purchased 8 acres from Mrs. Alice Browne Bryant Forney who had owned it since 1923 when her husband Don Carlos Bryant renamed it Coral Ridge Manor after his parents’ estate in Scotland). After purchasing/edifying Villa Blanca (later renamed White Sands) on Coconut Grove Boulevard east of NW 1st Street in 1928-1929 with funds raised through a sales drive led by Mrs. Boydell Baldwin; Moreno turned over management/administration/operation of this property to his wife Bella while living here until his death on May 7th, 1957; upon her death also title passed down to their eldest son Carlos Alberto Moreno Jr.. who resided here continuously until he inherited all assets & titles March 14th, 1984 thru February 2nd 1987 by intestate succession from his father Carlos Alberto Moreno Sr.. during whose lifetime production continued uninterruptedalbeit at various locations including residence outside Of town proper during business hrs.) Coral Springs was founded in 1892 by J.H. Bradford and his brother, H.L. Bradford, who named the community after the Coral Sea, which they saw as a potential source of fertilizer for their farmstead. The first settlers were all Englishmen who had moved to Florida from England during the early 1800s; they arrived on horseback and mined silver at what is now called Spring Hill Terrace on Marco Island. The town's first school was opened in 1894 and soon became a popular destination for vacationers looking for friendly people and good food. The townsite grew rapidly, reaching its peak in 1916 when it had a population of 25 residents and nine businesses! A devastating fire destroyed most of the town in 1918, but local resident Elisha Cook rebuilt it with help from American troops stationed nearby during World War I. After the war ended, Coral Springs began to experience rapid growth as new residents relocated to the area because of its fertile soil, high-quality water resources, and affordable prices. In 1940, Coral Springs was annexed by Tallahassee; however, it reverted back to its original status as an independent municipality within Everglades National Park following a referendum conducted by park officials challenging this decision!
