Laughlin founded an electrical power plant on Eighth Street in what is now Coral Gables and named it Laughlin Electric Company after his father-in-law's company. In 1932, Laughlin Electric Company merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company to form AT&T Corporation (later Verizon Communications). Coral Gables residents voted in favor of annexation by Miami in 1912 and by referendum in 1916; both decisions were later overturned on appeal. After World War I ended and the reunited Allied nations formed as the League of Nations, Red Cross Society president James Weldon Johnson offered land for a community hall and cemetery near Fort Lauderdale called "Coral Springs". The first home built in Coral Springs was a two-story frame house on Third Avenue near Roosevelt Roads that cost $2,500. By 1925 there were over 100 homes and businesses in the town; however only 12 residents lived within its borders at any given time because annexed areas lay outside of town limits on both sides of Biscayne Bay. In 1933, AISC merged with US Steel to create US Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal) which donated property adjacent to SR 522 east of Interstate 95 so that it could be used as an industrial park west of downtown Miami for steel production from 1935 until 1957 when much of the site was leased to Allis Chalmers Rubber Co., who constructed a large rubber plantation before moving off into bankruptcy three years later Hurricane Andrew destroyed much or all their property including most if not all their rubber production capability which left them stranded without industry or income anywhere near DowntownMiami until 2012 when they reopened under new ownership as Marathon Petroleum Corp renamed themselves Energy Transfer Partners LP with headquarters located just north Anacostia Riverwalk across from One America Center across from the old BP refinery before relocating back out onto Biscayne Bay
