There are still many wealthy residents living in Coral Springs today including some who have made significant contributions to the city through their business ventures or philanthropy. The economy of Coral Springs has always been rooted in its location within close proximity to both major universities and airports which have helped drive growth throughout the years. The first permanent residents were English colonists who arrived in 1749. In 1839, it became a U.S. territory following the Mexican-American War. In 1912, Coral Springs was annexed to Miami Beach and is now part of Miami-Dade County, Florida.
