Coral Springs is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Santa Rosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Coral Springs was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 1800s. A post office called "Coral Springs" was established in 1902, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1912, brothers Sanford and Harry Moss founded what would become Sunoco Oil Company on Tampa Bayou next to their home. By 1920, Sunoco had merged with Gulf Oil Company to form Gulf Oil Corporation. The company built an oil refinery here that continues operating today as Citgo Petroleum Corporation (now ExxonMobil). In 1957, President Dwight D Eisenhower designated Coral Springs as a National Wildlife Refuge due to its rich coral reef resources. Today many people commute into Orlando or Kissimmee for work or pleasure; this has led to development around the refuge including several shopping malls and hotels catering to leisure visitors. During World War II, Coral Springs became a major airbase for the Allies during the Battle of Iwo Jima where General Douglas MacArthur commanded troops from South Korea and Japan against Japanese forces entrenched on Iwo Jima Island. Many famous Allied pilots such as Chuck Yeager used this airfield during their campaigns against Japan throughout Asia Pacific Theater of Operations (AO). It also served as an important base for Operation Crossbow which targeted Japanese military installations in Southeast Asia during 1945-1946
