There is no doubt that the history of target holders in Coral Gables, Florida dates back to at least the 1920s. The first Targets in Coral Gables were located on Southwest Third Street, and operated by Mr. J.W. Madden out of his home. In 1927, a new Targets was opened on Northwest Second Street and operated by Mrs. Hildebrandt & Sons. From these early days until 1958, all targets in Coral Gables were made with lead shot and not canvas or plastic today as many people might believe! The first “real” shooting pits were built near NW Second and Broward streets in 1928-29 by Captains Harry Bacon (then Captain of the Police) and Dutch Schultz for their private use only! These pits could hold up to twenty shooters at a time which provided an excellent opportunity for practice during those early years when very few guns existed! In 1932 Captain Bacon donated his old gunnery schoolhouse (now used as a park) on Northeast First Avenue for use as a Shooting Park! This was also the year that Carnival began being held in town and Target originated its present name-Coral Gables Rifle & Pistol Club from then on! In 1935 Captains John Mapes (Captain of Detectives) & Julius Epstein added another lane to their pit which became known as the Alleyway Lane Pit; this Pit was 4 lanes long with Hempstead Road running between each lane making it one large open area perfect for practicing cover fire! By 1937 all Pits had been converted into firing lines with posts just inside each side of the pit giving shooters plenty of protection against snipers or other unauthorized individuals trying to shoot through walls or windows without your knowledge! However, most importantly, these Shooting Parks allowed citizens throughout Miami-Dade County to enjoy firearms seasonably without having to go outside!! This policy continued until 1959 when Dr. James Fenton purchased property east of NW Second Street from Harry Bacon; this land later became Marlins Stadium where some wonderful memories have been made over the years such as President George H W Bush visiting our facility while playing baseball there back in 1998!!! With so many great memories associated with Target Field including games like Super Bowl XXXIX played there between New England Patriots vs Baltimore Ravens (!), it is hard not to include Target Field itself among those listed here………. however I will focus more specifically on Coral Gables Rifle & Pistol Club which has been hosting some amazing shoots here ever since!! Target Field served as our primary shooting ground from 1935 until 1959 when we moved down South 2nd Avenue due to construction projects happening along State Road A1A right next door!!!!!!!! We truly miss our old Site but we can still share memories over email or social media using #CoralGABuilders
