Coral Gables is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,097 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coral Gables is located on the southeast corner of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The first European to visit the area now known as Coral Gables was Captain Juan de la Cosa in 1513 when he landed on what is now Key Biscayne Bay for trading purposes with Indians. He named the bay "Coral Gables" after his home island of Cuba and another Spanish name for Key Biscayne which he called "Isla Margarita". At about this time Englishman Henry Morgan also visited Key Biscayne and gave its name to a Keys Trading Post near present day Doral. In 1835 Captain John Fenton sailed into Captiva Sound from Havana, Cuba with plans to open up trade between those countries and North America. He named the sound "Coral Gables" after his plantation there on Captiva Island (now part of Fort Lauderdale). In 1847 Commodore James Eads sponsored by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter arrived at Stonington Harbor in search of an opening to South American ports while cruising through Tampa Bay aboard USS Constitution under Commandant Nicholas Longstreet's orders. After landing supplies on shore they reached Stonington Harbor where they anchored off what is now known as Battery Park before sailing back across Hillsborough River to their ship Enterprise which had been moored at Port Royal Beach adjacent to today's Marmelstein State Park next door to DeSoto Boulevard. A few months later during repairs aboard ConstitutionEads met Anna May Alcott who became his wife and stayed with him until her death in 1849; she left behind two children - one born in December 1848,the other born January 9,1850 - both christened Emerson Adams Alcott although their mother would like them called Eliot or Emmerson Adams Alcott (see below).
