Coral Gables is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,035 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Cuban immigrants in 1892 and named for the small coral reefs near Fort Myers, Florida where they had been shipwrecked during their voyage from Cuba to Key West. The first post office in Coral Gables was established on May 1, 1893. In 1896, a school was built and named Mrs. Henshaw's School after Mrs. Henshaw who donated land for it and also donated $2,000 towards its construction. In 1907, another school was built and named Driggs School after Mr. Clements who donated money for it as well as land for it on Gibbs Avenue which later became known as Coral Gables Boulevard. (K)eynes Junior High School (now part of Hillsborough Community College) opened in 1959 merger of two junior high schools that were open before that: Kitten Hawk (1948), Knowles Intermediate School (1949), and Pompano Beach Intermediate School (1950). Coral Gables residents voted to fire Mayor Raymond James in 1984 over his decision not to reduce city services requested by the then state legislators which would have saved the City over $1 million annually at that time according to a study done by Forbes magazine at the time including this prediction "If Mayor James' vetoes the proposed cuts--a move he has threatened--he will be impeached." The Miami Herald editorialized "It is easy to caricature Mayor James as an autocrat out of touch with what most people want...But behind all those tough talk about 'the people,' there's really no one governing this community." The vote followed heated discussion between civic leaders and members of Congress who had sent representatives to Tallahassee primarily because they were concerned about budget deficits caused by Hurricane Andrew which struck Pinellas County hard just a few months earlier killing more than 100 people with winds up to 150 mph (240 km/h). In late 1984 or early 1985 Coral Gables officials met with then state Representative Marsha Blackburn who suggested using eminent domain but James vetoed her measure saying "I don't think we should take property without compensation" while continuing to promise service reductions if elected mayor despite having no plan upon taking office other than further cutting services requested by state legislators instead of increasing them like he said he would do when elected
Coral Gables is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. Coral Gables was founded in 1912 by Cuban Americans who had fled to the US during the Spanish–American War. The name refers to two of its original residents: Carlos Mancini and his wife, Ana María Gilberto. The community began as a tiny farming village with just over 100 residents in 1912. By the early 1920s, however, Coral Gables had become one of Miami's most fashionable neighborhoods and became home to some of South Florida's wealthiest families. In 1928, Mayor Josephine Baker enacted a city ordinance that allowed for white only residency and voting rights for Cuban Americans living in Miami Beach and other areas within the city limits. This act helped create a rift between Cubans living in Coral Gables and those living outside of it - an issue that would continue to fester until after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Coral Gables experienced heavy flooding during Hurricane Andrew in 1992; however, damage did not amount to much beyond downed power lines and flooded homes. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage both within and outside of Coral Gable; however, no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the storm
