Coral Gables, Florida is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 11,868 at the 2010 census. In 1912, Floridian Edwin Ladd bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of beachfront property between 26th Street SW and 28th Street SW in present-day Coral Gables for $3,000 US dollars which he used as his private estate called "Ladd's Point". He leased it to Jardine Matheson who built an international shipping port on its shoreline that became one of South Florida's most powerful businesses. The site served as headquarters for Jardine until 1923 when it moved to Coconut Grove on Broward Boulevard near MacArthur Park where it remain until 1949 when it moved back to Ladd's Point after being sold by Jardine to developers Harry Biscardi and Milt Shriver who renamed it "Coral Gables". During World War II coral gables was one of several areas taken by Japan including Hollywood Hills; Pembroke Pines; Narita Airport; Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport; Tamiami Trail

The town was first settled in 1892 as Fort Myers Beach on Indian Key Island. The name "Coral Gables" originated from a white man's description of an attractive coral beach he saw while touring America with his wife in 1902. A year later, a group of wealthy Cuban landowners bought land in what is now Coral Gables for $5 per acre. They named their new community after their beautiful island home – "Coral Gables" – which they had built on a small piece of land near Fort Myers Beach on Indian Key Island. The first mayor of Coral Gables was Julius Rosenwald who served from 1915 until 1919. He was followed by Hernando Garcia who served from 1923 until 1927 and then Wanda Larkin who served from 1929 until 1933. From 1933 to 1957, City Councilman Harry Fenton held office as Mayor pro tempore before becoming Mayor in 1957 when Manuel Diaz became Mayor following Vargas' resignation due to health concerns about pollution generated by light industry along First Avenue South between Broward Boulevard and Coconut Creek Boulevard(now SR 334). In 1976, city voters passed a resolution designating downtown Coral Gables as an open-air shopping mall called "Coral Way". One year later, it was renamed "Mallory Square". In 1984, Mallory Square closed down because it could not keep up with increasing traffic levels and shoppers seeking more shopping opportunities outside of downtown Coral Gables found themselves outgrowing the mall's boundaries; it reopened as just another strip mall called Parkway East anchored by JCPenney and Sears among others
