The first European to visit the area now known as Coral Gables was a Spanish sailor, Juan Ponce de León, on his way from Mexico City to Cuba in 1513. He named the area Nápoles after Ferdinand Magellan's vessel that reached Peru in 1493 and which he observed from shore. In 1836, when Florida was admitted into the United States as a state, many of prominent Floridians moved to what is now Coral Gables because of its excellent soil and climate for farming land. A few families who had bought land around Coconut Grove (now part of Doral) began construction of their homes in 1840; but it wasn't until 1853 that residents started referring to Coconut Grove as "Coral Gables." This name stuck because it appears on all business cards issued by local merchants and professionals until after 1925 when they switched to "Carmel". The first school in Coral Gables was called ($) School No. 1 (). Classes were heldinderry morning from 1847 through 1861 due to lack of space at ($). A new $2 million school building () opened on November 17th 1915 following years of planning by then Superintendent Drury Wofford (). After World War I ended classes were suspended while the school underwent major renovation which included adding two stories (the original structure only had one story), enlarging roomy science laboratories and adding a gymnasium/auditorium (which remain today). In 1928 $4 million was raised for building upgrading including beautifying inside and outside walls ($), installation of air conditioning (), new roofs over existing schools (), addition of large playgrounds (6 acres) west side (.5 miles east-southwest from original location), installation of water towers (1 mile north-northwest from original site) and parkland (.3 miles east-southwest from original site). Today this project still awaits completion some 35 years later with plans calling for another $100 million investment Of particular note are two early architects who designed much old architecture associated with Coconut Grove: Robert Moses & Partners Architects who designed both the federal courthouse ($120 million dollar renovation completed in 1984) located across US 1 near International Drive--and also Theplugin House which served as home office for Congressman Tom Harkin during his time in Congress beginning 1965 until 2003. Both buildings are listed on the National Register Of Historic Places
