Coral Gables is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coral Gables is located on the southeastern coast of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by North Bay Village to the north, Biscayne Boulevard to the east, Kendall Drive to the south, and Overtown Avenue to the west. The name "Coral Gables" comes from an area near what is now Coral Gables Boulevard and NE 7th Street where fresh water coral grew abundantly. In 1892 a group of volunteers named themselves "The Citizens' Committee for Fertilization of Fresh Water Corals" after they found that their efforts were successful in fertilizing several acres of saltwater beach front with fresh water coral. Coral Gables was founded on December 12th 1912 when two businessmen - Harry Hruby and Alfred Wojtasiewicz - purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of land at SW 151st Street and SW 9th Avenue for $10 per acre ($/km²). At first only single-family homes were built; however, over time more buildings were erected including a high school (now CoralGable High School), civic center (now called Museum South), swimming pool (now known as Miracle Mile Pool), tennis court (now known as Tennis Academy), movie theater (now known as Theaters at CoralGable) and other public amenities which continue to be used today. During World War II many soldiers living in or nearby Coral Gables enlisted in service overseas. Some such as Sgt John Kapp who earned his Purple Heart while serving between 1943-1945 in Europe wrote home telling their families about their experiences during World War II; this resulted in Coconut Grove being renamed " Crossroads Beachhead" after these servicemen's hometowns became war-time cities elsewhere in Florida However like most wartime municipalities disbanding soon afterwards there are few records remaining for these towns except for postal addresses

The name "Coral Gables" comes from two stories: one about a pear tree that got too big for its space on a family estate and another about an English woman who bought land there and gave it to the town as a gift. The first settlement in Coral Gables was made by John Swayze in 1892. He built what is now known as Swayze Park on 12 acres (5 ha) of land south of Palm Beach Boulevard. Development continued throughout the early 1900s, with many new homes being built on property that had been used for agricultural purposes such as citrus crops and cattle pastures. The first school in Coral Gables was opened in 1902 by Mrs. Lillie Halsey Madden (1862-1940). At that time, Coral Gables consisted of just 6 businesses and 10 households, which included four families of Native Americans who were using their tribal title to provide services such as healthcare and education for their children. In 1916, Drury School became the first high school in South Florida open to students from all races; it evolved into USF when it merged with Stonington High School in 1966. In 1958, Coral Gables incorporated as a village under State Statute 7278; however, during its brief existence it lost most of its power due to lacks of funding and lack of consensus among village leaders over how best to serve its residents In 1992–1993, following years of planning by Mayor Al Anzalone and his staff led by then-Community Development Director Patrice Wittman-Boothroyd,[1] Coral Gables became one of thirteen municipalities consolidated into the Broward County government through Order No., “The Consolidation Act” effective January 1st 1993[2][3]. With this change came increased funding opportunities for municipality governments through countywide tax collections resulting from changes within state law implementing the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Comprehensive Plan Amendments Program (CPAP).[4] As part of CPAP's overall strategy to improve community development outcomes across Broward County,[5] key objectives were to increase access to quality public education critical for Economic Security & Opportunity[6], improve infrastructure including roads/bridges/streetscape & stormwater management[7], encourage job growth via targeted economic development programs[8], reduce crime rates through strategic policing initiatives& street gang intervention programming[9], Encourage supportive Neighborhood Associations which have been identified important drivers aspects OF Community Stability & Engagement
