Coral Gables is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,824. The first settlers arrived in 1835, when Captain John D. Morgan anchored near what is now Coral Gables to trade with the Indians. In 1845, James Waddell donated land for a public school and founded Coral Gables Academy which remains an important secondary school district in Broward County today. In 1924, developers Harry Karpf and Maurice Jankowsky purchased 712 acres (27 hectares) east of downtown Miami from American Electric Power Company for $5 million dollars to develop into what would become one of South Beach's most prestigious addresses. Known as Pembroke Park until 1941 when it was annexed by Miami Beach, it became Coral Gables after developer Harry Karpf merged two other parcels together into what would be known as Biscayne Boulevard/Coral Drive/Pineapple Road/Public School Road (later State Highway 9). Karpf donated money towards the construction of several civic buildings including Pembroke Park Stadium which still bears his name today; Bremerton Place Hospital; and Main Street United Methodist Church completed in 1925 adjacent to current day University Avenue between Pineapple Road and Government Center Drive NW.). Oneofthedisabled people who resided at Pembroke Park during World War II were members of the "Tower Boys" Squadron stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station nearby who parked their planes on top of Oneonta Hill to provide cover for Allied bombers attacking German shipping off Key West during that war; many Tower Boys remain still living descendants today! From 1951 through 1957 Cimarron Hills Golf Club was located adjacent to Oneonta Hill serving as oneofthe few golf courses within city limits then or now open to all citizens without charge or membership dues as well as being home to both local newspapers - The Herald-Sun morning paper back then and now The SunSentinel evening paper - making it an important cultural center dating back over 80 years! Coral Gables is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 39,083 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from its natural surroundings: coral reefs dotting the waters near the community. The first settlers in Coral Gables were primarily Spaniards who arrived in 1835. Englishman John Sibley and his family also settled there in 1869. By 1861, when American Civil War veteran General James Kirkland moved to Miami-Dade County, he had purchased 5 percent of all land in what is now Coral Gables Township. In 1867, he donated land for a public school which became Coral Gables High School; by 1926 it had become Miami-Dade College (MDC). In 1923 MDC merged with Broward College to form University of South Florida (USF). After World War II ended, many Americans left Miami and moved into Coral Gables because of the postwar boom in housing development throughout South Florida. As more people entered the area during this period of growth, trash accumulations became an issue and began to be addressed by local officials as well as property developers;[1] today's infrastructure includes a recycling program and green roofs on several buildings within the city limits of Coral Gables. In 1992 then-Mayor Carlos Gimenez organized a referendum proposing that part of Coconut Grove be annexed into Coral Gables so that it could have more services available such as sewers and streetlights;[2] since then much progress has been made to integrate Coconut Grove into contemporary society with both resident groups working together towards common goals while still maintain some autonomy for each group.
