The Cooper City community began to form in 1924 when a group of businessmen from nearby Weston decided to build a town on an abandoned military installation. The name "Cooper City" was chosen because it sounded like a term used by cowboys for their ranching operations in Texas. The first store opened in 1925 and soon there were several other businesses until the mid-1930s when World War II led to a decline in business activity as people turned towards wartime production. However, due to its proximity to South Beach and Hollywood, Cooper City continued to grow during this time with many retail businesses opening up including banks, department stores, movie theaters and restaurants that served local residents and tourists alike. In 1960, after years of planning spearheaded by Mayor Joe Carollo, Cooper City became one of nine municipalities within newly created Dade County; making it one of Miami's most diverse communities even before annexation occurred later that year by neighboringMiami-Dade County. In recent decades Cooper City has seen growth thanks in part to Allegiant Air providing jobs for many locals as well as tourists who visit South Beach or Hollywood for summer fun destinations such as UltraViolet cinemas and amusement parks like Six Flags Over Miami (USF). In addition to tourism growth Cooper City has seen significant development due to two sizable phases of investment totaling over $50 million: Phase One which focused on reclamation and redevelopment of downtown areas while Phase Two involved developing significant new housing developments across various neighborhoods inside/outside downtown."

Cooper City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Cooper City is bordered to the north by Hialeah and to the east by Kendallville; to the southeast by Coral Gables and Biscayne Bay; and to the south by Overtown and Homestead. The city was founded in 1927 as North Cooper City, named for Colonel John C. Cooper of US Army Signal Corps fame who had served as Mayor since 1915. In 2002, North Cooper City changed its name to Cooper City after opening an economy center there that became one of south Florida's leading economic engines. The first people inhabiting what is now Cooper City were Creek Indian chiefs who hunted deer on tract land grants from Spanish settlers in early 17th century. The first permanent white occupant was James Witherspoon who arrived on a ship called "Eagle" in 1807 and established himself near present day Ybor Street and Northwest Third Avenue with his family farmstead known as "Witherspoon's Landing." He married a Seminole woman named Katheryn (Catherine) Smith about this time which probably increased competition among white colonists for hunting grounds around Pensacola Bay due to cultural differences between European Americans and Native Americans. Many African slaves were also brought over as free Africans during this period; they are thought to have numbered up to 10 percent of the population of Fort Myers at its peak before emancipation in 1865. By 1830 most of Witherspoon’s Landing had been destroyed by Seminoles when they burned down all but one houseboat landing on Pensacola Bay due, according local legend, because Captain Elisha Cooke refused them permission “to build their own great wharf upon our bay”--an act against which he was later impeached forconspiracy under Ulysses S Grant! Not until 1840 did Witherspoon purchase additional tracts surrounding present day Coopersburg area from Spanish settler Pedro Menendez de la Vega without having any contact with him or his heirs until 1852 when Menendez' son Don Carlos purchased land bounded on the north side by NW Third Avenue (now NW Second Avenue), SW Military Highway (now NE First Avenue), SW Gulf Boulevard (now FM 3244),SW Parkland Road (now I-95) and SE 2nd Street from James Akins Sr., father-in-law of Governor Andrew Johnson! In 1868 two brothers—John Peele & Jesse Vail—took possession of an adjacent piece adjoining Don Carlos’ land just northwest cornerNW Second Ave.-SE Military Highway/Gulf Boulevard/ParklandRoad intersection They renamed it “Cooper City” after their brother John Peele who had long been associated with that location within Fort Myers society & politics! After much discussion among some prominent citizens relative thereto including member service aboard Confederate Captains Robert Fenton's USS Montgomery during 1861 Op Perry Expedition & resignation from Congress following Appomattox Court House Siege – At late night session prior adjournment Wednesday April 30th 1861 . . . The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including sugar cane, citrus fruit, and phosphate deposits. In 1916 the city annexed neighboring Plantation Heights, making it one of the most densely populated areas in Florida. Cooper City experienced growth until the late 1930s when a combination of factors such as World War II shortages of labor and an economic recession caused a decline in population.
