The first buildings in Cooper City were built on the corner of Northwest Highway and North Main Street. The town quickly became a center for farmers and their families who made their living off the land around them. In 1936, Cooper City incorporation was granted by Florida state officials and the town began to grow rapidly with new homes being built along Northwest Highway and other streets near the local post office. In 1948, James D. Cooper died at age 87 after many years of business success in Cooper City; his son John D.'s successor as namesake for the city was elected two years later at age 34%. In 1954, hurricane Floyd struck Jacksonville but caused very little damage to Cooper City; rather than rebuild following such a powerful storm, nearby towns like Jupiter Beach destroyed most of their infrastructure in order to accommodate more people during what turned out to be an unremarkable year for hurricane activity nationally. The late 70s through early 80s saw some growth in Coopersville as businesses found ways to stay open despite difficult economic times all over America due largely to deregulation which had taken hold at that time - this includedcoopercity`s own opening of its first bank branch in 1984 just one year after deregulation took effect nationwide).
