Many popular amusement parks are also located here like Six Flags OverFlorida, Sea World Aquarium and Universal Studios Florida which make up one half of the Cooper City–Jacksonville Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The other half includes much smaller towns such as Neptune Beach and Cape Coral which contribute to its growth rate over time without ever merging with Cooper City proper. The economy in Cooper City has been diversified over time with many businesses focusing on health care services, technology companies, manufacturing jobs for agricultural products or providing retail services to large chain retailers like Sears or Walmart. Cooper City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 30,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The Cooper City community began as a small farming town on the banks of Biscayne Bay in what is now Little Havana. In 1892, John Fenton Cooper established a cotton plantation in what is now Cooper City and named it after his father, James Fenton Cooper. The plant operated until it was sold to American Tobacco Company in 1968. At that time, the community became known as "the Cotton Capital of South Florida." After American Tobacco's sale, many small businesses closed and African Americans were forced out of their homes and into public housing projects such as Government Center (now University Village). In response to the city's lack of services or infrastructure for black residents, locals formed the Black Civic League in 1969 to provide better services and amenities for black residents. The league later became known as "Cooper City Action". For over two decades starting in the early 1990s, Cooper City hosted one of South Florida's largest annual Hispanic/Latino festivals called Fiesta de las Américas which drew more than 400 thousand people from across South Florida each year. The first buildings in what is now Cooper City were a cotton gin and laborer's cottage built by James Fenton Cooper around 1892-93. A post office was established at this location on March 12th 1893 under the name "Havana." In 1899–1900 an addition was made to this structure which housed a shop and farm market; this building still stands today adjacent to Interstate 95 near exit 219A/B southbound lanes on I-95 Northbound lanes
