The first post office in Cooper City opened on February 14, 1907. In 1925, Fort Myers incorporated as a city and granted to Cooper City its own charter; however, this did not take effect until 1927 when the annexation of Cooper City by Fort Myers occurred and the town adopted its current name as an official term. Cooper City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 53,973 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Miami-Dade County and the most populous municipality of any kind in Greater Miami. The Cooper City metropolitan area, which includes all of Kendall County and parts of Broward and Martin counties as well as parts of Palm Beach and Hardee Counties, has a total population of 1,598,167 as of 2017. The first European to set foot on what is now Cooper City soil was Captain John Smith in 1609 when he explored the region for Spain. He named it Santiago de Cuba but no permanent settlement developed until 1837 when surveyor George A. Brown surveyed land that would become Cooper City after his father-in-law James William Cooper purchased 640 acres (250 hectares). At first the area consisted only of low hills and swampy areas; however, over time more development occurred with several stores, hotels, churches and other commercial establishments opening up along Government Road (now Federal Highway 26) between Southwest 7th Street downtown and Northwest First Street northeast. By 1870 the town had grown to include some 121 residences including seven blocks east of Government Road on Third Street known today as Highland Park Boulevard. In 1886 Major General Carlos Baeza donated two miles (3 km) northwest from where present day 3rd Avenue meets Government Road to help found Hillsborough County with its new capital Tampa Bay; this donation also included a tract called "Tampa Bay" that bordered what is now Cooper City on one side while Spring Hill sat on the other. In 1887 Gov. Tom Butler approved an act to incorporate "Cooper City" within Hillsborough County after years of lobbying by members from both sides of Congress who believed that Hillsborough should have its own county seat since Tampa Bay lay directly across State road No 4 from what is now Cooper City. After much debate within their respective legislatures over whether or not to establish Hillsborough as a separate county with its own government rather than sharing powers with Tampa Bay due to jurisdictional conflicts - ultimately it was decided that an act incorporating "Cooper City" within Hillsborough would be appropriate given its growing population and burgeoning business interests in adjacent counties during this time period One major milestone associated with early days in Cooper City were the dedication ceremonies for two new elementary schools – New Beginnings School west off Government Road near FM 516 & Cherokee Elementary east off 2nd Avenue southeast – on November 14th 1905 just six weeks before Thanksgiving Day! These schools were built using taxpayer funds provided by then Governor Cleddon Pazder via legislation enacted into law entitled "An Act For Building Schools". This marked another important milestone for the community as these institutions served local students until 1959 when they were replaced by Shands Elementary & Middle School located on NW Second Avenue southwest currently serving students fromelementary through high school . On January 26th 1914 Mayor Wm Schlesinger dedicated three blocks northward along Northwest First Street northeast from SW 6th street – now corneringNW Second Ave.– original site of Community Church which later became Sun Life Center – home ground to many local athletes during their teenage years prior to attending Big Cypress High School nearby where they continue today playing football/soccer/basketball etc.. On December 2nd 1916 Mrs Anna Schieffer donated 500 feet long (152 m) by 30 feet wide (.98 m × .68 m) boardwalk extending uptown from NW First St./SW Second Ave.– still extant today paralleling Federal Highway 26 near SW 8th Place northeast cornering Flagler Drive/coastal bluffs overlooking Gulf waters– originally part Of Sun Life Center developments which are still extantToday! This Boardwalk literally connected Downtown Commercial districts uptown w/the West Side residential neighborhoods southwesterly…. [This]was truly One Of A Kind!…Throughout These Centuries There Has NEVER Been ANY COOPER CITY EVENT OR PROGRAM THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN SOME LINK TO THE HISTORICAL COOPER CITY BOARDWALK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
