Cooper City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. The city is named after Cooper River, which flows through it. Cooper City is located on the Sawgrass Expressway and generally has a central business district and small satellite towns around it. It was once an agricultural center with cotton plantations and other agriculture businesses; however, those activities have now largely been replaced by light industrial and professional services. The first white person to settle in what is now Cooper City was William Fenton in 1892. He organized a group of men to buy 160 acres (64 ha) of land from the Seminole Tribe for $3 per acre. In 1896, he built the first house in what is now Cooper City and opened his store there. The town of Cooper City sprang up around Fenton's store and soon had a post office, school, watermill, blacksmith shop, grocery store and two churches--the First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and the Second Baptist Church (founded 1897). Fenton's son-in-law Pee Wee Fenton bought him out in 1902 and moved his family to Jacksonville Beach where he established himself as a real estate agent. In 1916, Pee Wee Fenton married Anna Ladd who became one of America's most successful women entrepreneurs; she founded several department stores including Seagrams Stores Inc., Macy's Inc., JCPenney Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Corp., Lord & Taylor Dept.(bought by Sam Walton), Neiman Marcus Incorporated (bought by KPMG LLP), Disney Store Company etc.. Anna also founded numerous charitable organizations such as Our Lady Of Charity School which provides education for underprivileged children throughout South Florida; Stonington Hospital in West Palm Beach; Our Lady Of Loretto School which provides education for low income students within walking distance of home; Holy Cross Children’s Hospital;; CARE Team USA - Catholic Relief Services - an international relief organization providing safe haven for refugees during times of crisis or emergency
