Coconut Creek is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,955 at the 2010 census. Coconut Creek is located on the eastern coast of Miami-Dade County and straddles the county line with Palm Beach County to its east. It is bordered by Coral Gables to the north, Lauderdale Lakes to the west, Pompano Beach to the south, and West Palm Beach to its east. The name "Coconut Creek" came from two Indian words meaning "to divert (a river) between two points". The first word was used by Captain John Stroud during his expedition in 1786 when he named a tract of land between Coconut Creek and Biscayne Bay after an aspect of this creek that flowed through his plantation. The second word was derived from a local tree called "coconuts", which grew along both sides of these waterways in early Cuba settlements. In 1833, George Washington Bainbridge acquired 640 acres (248 hectares) of land south of present-day Coconut Creek within what is now part of Sunrise Boulevard & NW 1st Street; this area became known as Bainbridge Heights. One source says that Bainbridge named Coconut Creek after American president James Ketchum who had purchased some property near it on Key Largo Island for use as a summer home in 1824. After Ketchum's death in 1827, his estate passed into private hands and no one has been able to establish definitive proof that he ever named Coconut Creek after President James Ketchum or any other person. A popular story tells how Arlington Avenue began as an old road leading from Biscayne Bayou eastward through Coconut Creek; however this road has also been debunked as false history based on evidence dating back to 1926 when aerial photos were taken documenting coconut trees growing along Arlington Avenue
The Coconut Creek Indian tribe had their own village on the island that is now Coconut Creek. The first Europeans to visit the island were Spanish explorers in 1511, and they named it Isla de la Coconut. In 1795, Captain James Cook discovered the island and named it after his flagship, HMS Discovery. The British military stationed on the island began using coconut flour as a source of food for their forces in 1802. Coconut Creek was originally part of Florida until 1810 when Spain ceded it to America. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate artillery batteries fired at Union troops near Coconut Creek and destroyed some homes and trees. After the war ended, the United States acquired Coconuts creek from Spain for $1 million dollars. The U.S. built a fort on the island in 1865 and used coconuts as ammunition stores. In 1945, Englishman Kenneth Morey became the first foreigner to set foot on Coconut creek when he arrived by boat from Key West with plans to develop its resources into oil wells
